is this piston the factory one ?

hey guys i am tearing into my 85 200s to replace all the gaskets , i know the compression is 146 , but i got a leak on the bottom of the case where i had the guy tig weld it , he is going to weld the inside after i take it apart the rest of the way.

the piston on the top says N1 , and there is 958Z and 4 on the side of it.

the cylinder looks good , has a ring of black crap around the 1/4 inch or so , and the top is coated with really thick black crusty stuff. rings look good.

any ideas , or know where i could find out if this is a stock or aftermarket

It probably says "IN" meaning that's the intake side. Looks stock to me but it's hard to tell.

Thats a stock piston, the 'N1' is actually 'IN', meaning which side of the piston faces the intake.

is that what the vlaves and piston top is supposed to look like ? i mean i knew it was running rich and the plug was sooty , but man that seems really black

and i am thinking it is the factory piston , i looked it up some on google and it came across as a stock honda piston , my compression was 145 , so given that , and given i have this all apart , should i hone the cylinder and throw this piston and rings in there , or throw a new piston and new rings in there ?

and what do i do to the head ? do i just clean the black stuff off , replace the valves and seats and that's it ? or do i have a valve job done ?

Yeah, most of the old 185's and 200' heads look like that after ~25 years of use. Its just carbon, completely normal. I always just clean the head off with a wire wheel. Id definately hone the cylinder, but unless the piston has a lot of wear and/or clearance in the cylinder, I would just reuse it. Rings, you might replace them just because its apart and after 25 years it could probably use new ones. Your valves are probably fine, but again, if you want to do them while the engines apart, it couldnt hurt. Most top end and full gasket kits will include new valve seals, which require removing the valves to change anyway.

Well you figure 20+ years of carbon buildup. Looks pretty normal. Since you have it that far apart you could go with a .020 overbore if you are looking to spend a little money. I just did that with my 200x. Bore/hone was $50 and a new Wiseco was about $100.

i read somewhere about putting a 200x piston and rings in a 200s , making the compression go up some , is this a good or bad idea ? i mean if i could get a little more power for about the same price for a 200x piston kit , why not ya know ?

You can also throw a 200x cam in there while you're at it!!
