    Honda 250es Bigred running spotty.

ok, well my 85' bigred is running horrible.

it's cutting out and when I get to 4th gear and start moving fast, it will start shutting down.

At first I thought (or hoped) that it was the spark plug, so I went a bought a NGK spark plug. It didn't help.

so now I'm thinking it's the float in the carb, because it's sortof acting like the motor is flooding out. But there's no black smoke or backfire.

what else could it be? And do you think I need to rebuild the whole carb?

any input or recomendations to this problem is greatly appreciated.

    thanks--Austin--

It does sound like the typical carb issues these trikes tend to have. To eliminate something easy, loosen the gas cap and try running it like that to see if your cap vents correctly. If it doesnt change anything, I would rebuild the carb and put an INline filter off the tank.

Ok, thanks scottZJ, I removed the gas cap, and it made no difference what so ever. So I'm going in the next few days to buy a carb rebuild kit. ( were iced in right now so I can't go anywere)
and were do I get the Inine filter from? Do I need to order it off line?

plus today I changed the oil and oil filter, I changed the gas line, purged the exhaust, and realized the exhaust is rusted out so I'll go get a new exhaust. And the new air filter I ordered came in today. So I put it on. And I ordered a new seat from eBay.

now I'm about to get ready to take the racks off and repaint them. So I'm keeping busy, and hopefully I can get the bigred running right. All I need now is a new gas tank.

if anybody can recomend any special or name brand parts that are the best I will aprreciate that, because I want this thing running at the top of it's game.

    thanks--Austin--

these guys have big red tanks pretty cheap, call them to make sure its in stock, it can take months to get one sometimes.... http://atvpartsdepot.com/

i also think that he meant to type In Line filter, you know a fuel filter like on a lawn mower, they are about 3 bucks at the hardware store

I figured probly a inline filter, but I figured that was some special type filter. And are the gas tanks metal or plastic?

I had an '85 250 SX with the same issue with it running.Long story short it was a combination of the cold start/choke not closing all the way and a bad needle seat,I replaced those and it ran like a top.Deffinatly run an inline with a bad tank also.Good luck with it..

I'm hoping it's the cold as well, I'm going to run it Saturday because it's supposed to get up to 60 degrees. And I'm trying to find a carb rebuild kit, would autozone have it or should I call the Honda dealership?

I'm hoping it's the carb, if not I can't afford to do much more work on it, so I might have to sell it, I really don't want to though because the 3 wheeler is my favorit item I own.
