    newbee terring it up

ok so i got a rm 250 1985, i think. i couldn't get it started so i toor it up. someone has put a diffrent coil cdi and i beleave they re soddered diffrent wires to the stator. i get resistence from the coil but on stock it has two wires coming from the cdi to coil this coil has only one. ? dont know the number for the coil. The cdi # is 32900-41421. i get voltage out of stator but understand that one line should put out more but cant be sure which cus of previous wire change.
cdi i have no idea of how to test cus it aint the original. wire colloring is diffrent.
i will attach pictures if i can.
if anyone can tell me (1) how to test cdi while not on bike?
(2)which line fron stator should go to which line on cdi?
(3)why coil only has one line from cdi?
(4)why someone would do this to any machine? Use the right parts or give it to someone who will!

Ok So I Cleaned Everything Up, Cut All The Wires Put On New Connecters New Spark Plur, And Behold There Is Spark!!! Well Over 300v At The Plug. Still Wont trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro Start. And That Thing Aint Light Trying To Push Start Down The Street!
I Got Some Gass Leaking Out Of The Carb Drain Hose And Maybe Somewhere Else On The Carb Hard To Tell.
Could This Be A New Problem?
Oh And I Sprayed Starter Fluid In The Carb And Still Wont Start.
Did Get It To Fire Once Though!
    Any Ideas?

if you got it to fire, its probably a fuel delivery problem. take the carb apart and clean it, then after its back together, use starting fluid to try to get it running.

The CDI is Suzuki- which you have probably already figured out. If it was aftermarket the CDI would have to match.

The carb leaking can be a problem but usually would flood it and the plug would be wet.

You got it to fire, That's a good sign. How long did it run for?

Timing may be off. Not sparking at right time.

Did you jet the carb for cold winter weather?

ya im getting well over 330 at plug now and just read in manual that gas draining out when not running is normal per suzuki manual.
as for firing it fired maybe three piston strokes.
i would have thought that the starter fluid would have did it even if carb was problem.
im wondering if maybe the stator is on upside down and its sending spark at bottom of stroke. is that possable?

Dump like 2 drops of mixed gas in the cylinder and try it.

I would start with the carb.

Is the carb jetted for cold winter air?

    not sure

not sure if it jetted for cold but i was trying to start it in the living room so that shouldn't matter(girlfriend loves this)
i was going to try the gas into the cylender but wasn't sure if that was ok . now i've loaded it on to the truck to have someone else look at it ut i think i will pull it back off and try.
any idea about the stator being on upside down?

allright i figured that i needed to recheck the gas mixture. Whate the bottle says 32:1 and the manual is saying 2 gal. to 12.8 oz.. that aint 32:1 thats 20:1! maybe that will explain the high rev.(du) STARTS RIGHT UP RIGGED UP STATOR AND WAY LEAN GAS. I THINK I" GO GET A DUN BUGGY NOW.

can somone please look at this and help

ok let me give as complete as discription as i can.
it is an rm 250 but it has had diffrent parts put on by previous owners.
i beleave the stator and cdi are from a 1979 the color on the wires dont match from stator to cdi but i was able to get it started for a while, the the stator wire at the coil broke no way to fix so i bought a new stator now i cant get it to start. unshure if i have wires going to the right cdi wires as they are diffrent color. i do get like 30 ish volts to the ignition coil, but no spark. on the original stator it has a wire conecting two coils then leads to cdi. another wire go to coils to cdi the the othere coil wire goes to ground then to cdi.
on the new coil one wire conects the two coils and at the other end of coils the wires lead to the cdi with neither of them being grounded first.

so i guess my question is is 30 ish volts to ignition coil enough that it should spark cuz coil test good as per ohm.
and is the cdi for the 85 in some way groundig the stator wire which the 79 grounds at the stator.
i think what im gonna do is just ground the stator wire which corsponds to the old one, and cross my fingers , but i will wait for any responce for about 6 hours.
and if im being an idiot please dont hesatate to tell me cuz all i really care about is getting this bike going and yes i know i should just replace the whole electrical but allas im poor!

Have you compared wiring diagrams from the 85 and 79 wiring schematics. I would start there. Also, make sure where the coil attaches to the frame with the bolts that those areas are nice and clean and rust free. You will probably have to just end up getting the proper parts for the year bike you have and start from there, but it sounds like you're not even 100% sure what year bike you have. It sounds like you are missing alot of important info. You say the suzuki manual says the carb should leak gas if it isn't running???? I know that isn't right. I also hope that you had the throttle wide open while shooting the ether in the carb. Have you tried disconnecting the carb from the intake and shooting the ether (starting fluid) directly into the cylinder intake? Maybe take the plug out and putting ether directly into the spark plug hole? It sounds like you are battling too many problems to have just one thing work for you. How about some more pictures of what you have for your wiring since you said you have a new part.
