85 200x lights burn out when you rev engine

I went through the entire wiring system. Voltage shows about 11-12 v AC, then jumps up to 50 v AC when you rev the engine. I have the wiring diagram and manual, but shows nothing about a voltage regulator, or a cause.

    1) is there a voltage regulator of some sort?

    2) can I install one somehow, maybe aftermarket?

I had an extra CDI black box thing laying around, but did not make a diference. Does this have anything to do with regulating the voltage, or is it just for ignition? Could my lighting coil be bad?

    Thanks in advance.

maybe the regulator is bad or the stator?

you can look at my sig and see a link to DL manuals for your trike.

I've been fighting regulator issues lately too. I didn't know the 200x had one, but I looked it up and it sure does! No question that's the problem.

I'm glad this question came up (though I'm sorry about your problems), we've been having the same problem with a 200s forever now! We didn't have a manual either so thanks oscarmayer!

See my thread on this very issue with a 200s a couple months ago. The quick answer: I replaced both bulbs at once and it resolved the problem...for now. Truthfully, I think that the Chinese bulbs I've been buying are crap, no comparison to the original Stanley bulbs that came stock.

The other suggestion someone came up with was something called a volt-pack. This is a basic regulator for just this purpose. Search for it on Dennis Kirk, or see my thread on it below:

I had the same problem on my X, but in my case, it was indeed the voltage regulator... Just before the bulbs popped, they turned a very bright blue

Check also that the wires coming from the stator are not grounding out against the engine, or chassis.

If anyone needs a volt pack I can normally beat DennisKirks total price if your only ordering a volt pack. PM me if you need one.

No... my trike does not have an obvious voltage regulator. know it's a regulator problem, but I don't know where it is, or how it is regulated without one. It puts out AC, and a regulator would convert to DC and limit the voltage to 13 - 14 v. The ONLY electronics are the coil, and CDI box that has 1 round plug that is mounted under the tank.

I was wondering if anyone here that is familiar with this setup could tell me if the voltage regulator is built in with the CDI.

Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll just add a regulator. The lights have been working for the past 8 years, and just recently quit.

Ok, let me correct myself. I said earlier that the '83-'85 200x has a voltage regulator. I found this in admittedly unscientific way....I looked on Ebay, and people had them for sale. But I just looked in the actual HONDA service manual, and guess what? No regulator. I'm not sure what they're selling on ebay.

Anyway, if there's no regulator, it must be a failing lighting coil....

I did the same thing with ebay. How's that KLT 110 running? I bought one for my wife 14 years ago for $10.00, and rebuilt it about 6 years ago. She loves it and refuses to ride anything else.
