Is it just the starter motor or something else???

    Hi,

I have a 225drs, the electric start is a bit lazy and turns over very slowly (will not start this way, but starts on first pull with the recoil starter) , I have replaced the batttery with a new one and check the voltage and connections but no change.

Could it be that I need to replace the starter motor or is there something else that I need to do before that.

Usually starters are all or nothing, meaning either they work or they don't. You're sure your battery is putting out 12 volts?

Yeah, It's putting out 12.3 - 12.6 on the new one and goes up to 13 volts and above when its running (also thought I had a charging problem!)

Is it possible to get the starter motor serviced or would it be better to get another one, there is a couple on ebay but they could just be as bad as the one I currently have.

What if you remove the starter (should just be a couple bolts) and use jumper wires from a battery to see how fast the output gear turns? I have used this method to test starters before.

I am willing to bet that it is the brushes that are causing the problem....worn brushes. They will be (or are on a honda) at teh back of the starter.
