225 DX wont start only backfires

Ok guys a buddy of mine bought a 225 DX for 200 bucks. Thing is it won't start we even tried pull starting it, all it does is backfire. We checked the spark it is good, we tried starting fluid didnt work, compression is also good I want to go riding but we can't get this thing to fire and I don't feel like towing him behind my shee the whole way.

Yeah, clean the carb and air filter. I world also put a new plug in it.

Timing is fixed on these trikes but it could have jumped a tooth on the cam chain, I would start with the carb, filter and plug though.

I'm sorry forgot to mention that, we cleaned the carbs new plug and new fuel clean filter. Is it likely that it could have jumped time?

How do you set the timing on a 225 dx?

When you said you cleaned the carbs, do you have more than one? Did you clear all the jets and set the needles to the factory settings?

    Check the manual....

Remove the timing plug on the left side cover (look behind the top of the pull starter). Turn the motor over until the "T" mark on the rotor (looking throught the little hole) lines up with the fixed mark point. I usually take the pull starter off and sping the motor over ccw by hand with the spark plug out. Then take the 2 screws out that hold on the cam sprocket cover on the left side of the motor. When the "T" mark is lined up with the fixed mark the line on the cam sprocket should be lined up with the pointer on the top of the head.

If the line on the sprocket is off by 180 then sping the motor over once to turn the cam 180.

Ignition timing (spark) is fixed, check it with a timing light and replace parts as needed if it is off.

I have the manual scans for this at home and can post them if this isn't clear enough for you.
