i see that some parts are year specific
mainly concerned about which clutch to get .

There will be a serial number stamped on the left side, above the foot peg area. For the 85 ATC engine, number is like TB06E-2400001~. For the 86, number is like TB06E-2500001~. I would assume it might keep going like that for the TRX engine, but I am not positive.

As far as I know, any ATC/TRX clutch should work any any 85/88 motor, but it seems that the 89 clutch "upgrade" kit is the way most guys like to go.
