    Rear differential lubrication grease

    Folks

    I went to change the rear end fluid on the 85 big red I am rebuilding (waiting on gasket set from motorheadtoys, he F'd around and mailed it this am when I won it Monday, thought I would be riding this weekend) anyhow, the previous owner put a grease fitting on either side the differential in the axle housing. Pulled the cap off the rear end, nothing but brown grease. I know some newer hondas do this, what do y'all think, try to flush it out with diesel??? or pump a new tube in there and let it come out the fill hole? I know that it takes rearend fluid. maybe this is a great idea, I dunno, I need some feed back though!

    Yikes! your not supposed to use heavy duty bearing grease in a differential like that. your supposed to use 80 or 90w gear oil.

    I'm not sure if it matters.. but I would flush it with kero or dessiel real good and use what the manufacturer recommends.

    I say pull it all apart and flush it out with degreaser and clean everything. Apply grease to seals and axel and put it back togther. Dont use the nipples. The bike wasnt desgined with them, mine is still alive and kicking and has just had regular maitenance. Maitenance is the key. I dont think he means the nipples were on the diff housing Chris? I gather they are on the axel tubes either side of the diff. Check your diff oil level while your at it. Hope this helps.

    Oh! lol.. I though he meant the former owner filled the rear differntial with bearing grease.

    yes, the rear diff is full of grease, no oil

    Look on the diff next to the inspection/fill cap, cast into the housing it says what to fill it with I think it's Hypoid 80wt(small letters). At least it is cast into my SX diff, and I think the housings are close to the same(but not exactly) and I wouldn't see why honda would cast the oil recommendations in one diff housing but not the other.

    I'd flush it and put the correct stuff in, the needle bearing at the end of the pinion and the Main pinion bearing needs fluid not grease, there is no gaurentee that its getting up there. Hopefully everything is good and good luck.

    I was hoping the guy wasn't that dumb. what a mess you have there. I'd fill it and let it soak overnight in kerosene or deisel fuel.. then flush it several times to get that crap all outta there.

    I didn't think someone could be that dumb. guess I was wrong.

    WOW, thats a new one, I'm still trying to figure out why? what would be the benifit? I hope everything is ok in there, I say flush it for sure at the least. Probably ought to take it apart and make sure nothing is broken, or to badly worn. Or maybe this yahoo was on to somthing

    Im not the yahoo, the previous owner was, I just stated that some Honda Rincons have axle grease

    I wouldn't use diesel or kerosene too long, as it might eat the seals. It probably needs torn apart and cleaned. Bummer.
