Depends where your welding the frame I would imagine. if it's real close to any electronics I'd move them outta the way..

if not ground it out and weld away my trike riding freind.

I took my wheeler to work.. drove it in the back door. welded up the swinger and rode it back out. no problems.

It is a good practice to unplug the CDI box.

99.9% of the time you would be right.

one time i seen a stainless brake line act like a fuse and melt, we weren't even welding near it.

Just to be safe I would disconnect the CDI. I've seen electronics get fried before from someone welding and not disconnecting stuff.

When welding on anything with electrical parts, I suggest you hook the ground as close to the weld as possable.

Swigin, sounds like the stainless brake line carried the ground. I had the same problem on a truck, It had a bad ground from the engine to the frame. I hooked the jumper cables up, had a co-worker spin the engine over and watched the power steering hose smoke. It was working as the ground. I'm not saying unhooking the CDI Is a bad Idea, because It's better to be safe.

I also took all of your advice and unhooked the CDI box, I didn't bother to try to grind down the weld to make it look pretty,, The frame is getting trashed as soon as I start the frame swap anyways..
    before

    after

    after, after

Like I said, it doesn't need to be pretty

whet rod did you use? i believe the frames are chromoly
thats why it looks so poor prolly

when you weld - you want to keep the ground as close as possible to your work, theres always a chance of the current to flow through all the bearings in it!
this could spot weld them ect...
ALWAYS CHOOSE THE CORRECT ROD,OR WIRE

keep the shocks from getting hot from the heat
electronics can be affected as well

It's an 85 frame so it's plain steel.

    It just looks like crap

Again, it will serve the purpose, but a GOOD total swap of all the parts to another frame can take quite a while. Swaps are a great time to address and fix everything, rebuild forks, allballls bearings etc etc etc.

I would have put a nice brace on the backside just so I'd know it would last and give Roy time to swap it over. BUT, I asked him for a 30pack so I can understand why he let Harry Hacker do it J/K sorry, I couldn't resist

Good point about the bearings though as I've seen that happen myself :
