Any tutorials you can post or advice, taking off the rear axle of my 350X

Never did the Honda type axle before. Kawies you can just unbolt the carrier and it's off. Doesn't appear so easy for my 350X. What should i do and what am I in for. I need to tear her down to get the basics fixed up.

first off look up trike manuals here on the search menu download yourself a manual! that is the basic after that i can tell ya how what year 85 or 86? it is pretty easy but your gonna need some pb blaster or other and a deadblow or rubber mallet of some sorts cause chances are some parts are gonna be stuck! but here is a basic rundown take off the right rear wheel the brake side take off the hub, remove the rear brake caliper on the holder 2 bolts now if you have a wrench big enough which you should before you start start with the outer or larger locknut and it is reverse thread so what would normally be tight is to loosen. then back that puppy up quite a bit and loosen the inner lock nut far enough back to remove the collar and lock ring, once those are removed you have to remove the threaded collar in front of the brake hub that will most likely need some persuasion. then remove the brake hub with the disc still on. remove the chain. loosen the lock bolt on the carrier and both allen head bolts rubber seals etc. now weather its 85 or 86 you have to remove the brake holer with an e-clip remover and note the outside on the e-clip. place the axel nut on the end of the axel and beat the crap out of it should push the axel out of the bearing carrier and vola!!

First thing I did after purchasing the bike, was get a manual. As I do with every bike I ever buy. I didn't make this thread for sole purpose of people telling me how to do what I can read in the manual. I asked for advice or "tutorials" because that is where you learn the little things about what to expect. Just like tri-z ripper offering some advice about how hard things might come apart. And chris200x offering advice about tools.

These trikes are 20+ years old and I understand that things don't always work as easy as the manual says they should. That's when i come here for advice from experienced people who have been through it.

That being said, Those nuts on the axle are a real B-word to get off. I'm waiting for some PB Blaster to soak in right now because i can't get them to budge, even with a giant wrench.

Oh, dont' forget to take that snap ring off. you won't be able to take that bigass nut off without removing that clip from the groove. Took me an hour to figure that one out.

I know the giant adjustable wrench is a hero when it come to the fade nuts, but i picked up a pair of channel-lock pliers at home depot that had angles in them for grabbing on nuts and bolts. The larger pair is perfect for grabbing on the round part of the fade nut so you dont round off the corners of the hex. I've had much better luck this way and i think its because you get a good grip in the center over the threads and you reduce any flex that the splines or threads may have...

*EDIT I forgot the fade nut has backwards threads like ripper stated, and Chris said it must be backed all the way off, almost to the rotor hub in order to get the snap ring off the axle. That little 3/16 sleeve that spins free of the fade nut assy on the wheel side has the ring under it and it keeps the rear from flying apart when you ride.

OK, yeah, I got the snap ring off and finally broke the big nut lose. I'm turning it clockwise because it's backward threads. Problem is, it seems to be just turning and unscrewing off. Is there something else I have to do before that big nut turns off there or am I looking at a possible stripped nut?

you don't have to take that big nut all the way off, it's on a splined collar that should slide off the axle.. Then the brake rotor, (which is on a splined collar as well)should come off as well

The big nut, and the 'sleeve' nut i have the pliers on both thread onto the a threaded piece that simply slides onto the splines of the axle. If you have the snap ring off then you can just slide that whole piece off and you'll get the threaded part and the 2 nuts. Does that make sense?

When i took one of mine apart i did need to use some 80 grit sand paper and just rub it all around the axle where the snap ring was because the splines and the edge of the 'sleeve' nut are very close to the same size in diameter as the axle. You may just be getting a little resistance from dirt or rust as you're trying to slide it off...

OK, Thanks. That was actually my fault. No patience. I kept turning it and it came off. OK, I have everything off the brake side of the axle.

Laugh if you need to, But how do I get the chain off this thing? No chain tensioner like my Tecate. haha. I don't know how to get slack in the chain to take it off.
