Ned Help getting more HP from ATC200

alright guys ive been looking around the internet for like 2 weeks now and even though i have came close to finding my answers i havent found exactly what im looking for.... here is the scenerio....

i have a lawnmower that has been lowered and modified to the point that it is pretty much a gokart that looks like a lawn mower.... it is powered by a 83 atc200 engine..from what im told that is, its definitly a 200 but i am unsure of the year... i swear it only has 4 gears and a high/low box... but from what i have seen in the specs section of this website there wasnt any 4 speed 200's.... it also has electric start with pull start back up... chain drive

well here's the deal... i want to put some money into this baby and get some extra HP out of it.... because at last year's lawnmower drag races i got smoked by mowers with regular brigg's in them!!... it was mostly due to gearing but i'd also like to get more power, because the competition is going to be MUCH tougher this year....

ive seen options of putting bigger carbs from xr's, and such, as well as cam's but nothing is year specfic.... i plan to tear the motor completly apart and fix the problem with slop in the shifter.. then check everything as a put it back together with new rings and seals and all of the normal stuff...

my question is what model and what year of carb, head?, cam, piston, NOS booster (haha), and whatever else should i be looking for in order to get the best bang from my buck....

one other thing.. i want to keep the bottom end... or at least the electric start... thanks guys... and dont be afraid to throw some technical info at me... iim pretty savvy with this stuff especially snowmobiles... i just dont know alot about 3 wheeler models....

to check out what i have now go to youtube and search "55mph lawnmower"

    thanks again...

Your engine is from a 82-83 Honda ATC-200E Big Red. It should have 5 speed Hi+Lo. Fix your shifter issue and you should hvae 5 speed. If you want to gain power, bolt a 83-85 ATC 200X Top end on your bottom end. The 200x have a higher compression piston, better camshaft and carburetor.

alright cool! thats the kind of info i was looking for! i honestly cant remember if it has 4 or 5 speeds... its been all winter and most of last fall since i ran it.... im sure your right tho.....

i was told by a local guy that the xr200 cam was what i wanted but i always like a second opinion... whilst reading i was also coming to the conclusion that the 200x cam would get me better low end torque and i assume thats why you say to go with it?....

wheres the best place to get a deal on these parts? im assuming ebay...

do i need the 200x jug and head too or are they the same as the e?

it is shifted with the handle seen on the left of the steering wheel... its kinda hard to see i guess... but more or less the original shifter is turned straight up and bent then linked to the hand shifter... ill try to get a pic of that for ya... all in all its a pretty awesome ride..... i just installed an electric fuel pump from ebay this evening.... it pumps to the copper tank and then gravity feeds from there... the copper tank has an over flow that runs back to the gas tank.... works like a charm so far!

guess im going to have to check the number of gears tonight!!

thanks again for the info it was exactly what i needed to know!! (ive been given a run round around way to much)

I'm with you about the XR stuff, I know the XR200 have an better cam then the 200X but I don't know what year to look for. Also the XR200 have even higher compression piston then the 200x. Read this article, it will explain it better then myself.

hmmmm so what i take from that article is that i should be looking for a:

    xr200r piston,
    200x aftermarket cam
xr200r 26mm carb or dg 27mm keihn... which confuses me a bit because the carb on my atc200e already measures 27mm....

i guess the jug, rod, and head are the same?

or does the xr have better walve springs?
maybe i could just buy xr valve springs and use my stock atc200e head?

hmmm the more i read the more questions i have... i guess it is all going to depend on the parts i can find....

ANYONE HAVE ANY OF THESE PARTS FOR SALE??

Bomber - that sux!!!! I will boycott the Bikeshow for sure - or maybe show up with a picket sign that says "Where are the lawnmower races?" I think there are far too many bike shows in the area - and not enough mower races and things like that.

You know all the bike shows in the area are so rigged!!!!! Maybe I will show up wearing a t-shirt that says "Harley Davidson - turning gasoline into noise without the harmful benefits of Horse-Power - Since 1901"

yeah i dont even think it is show it think it is a "ride in, rev your engine, cram into our shitty little bar(mac's) drink a bunch of beer and tear out" oh and make sure you wind out in the first couple gears so your exhaust echos off the buildings real good! actually i should probably watch what i say, being the new guy around here an all... im just pissed our races got nixed because some bar owner wants to make a bunch of money! (which is the exact opposite idea of the festival).... i guess they had mower races in tionesta last year for indian festival.... if you see or hear anything about that let snake or me know right away! haha

    hello again,

what does anyone know about the wiseco 12:1 piston they offer for this and (what seems like) every other 200? the part number is 4289M06550....

from what ive learned the bore on the 200e is 65mm... so this would be .5mm over... #1 am i going to have to run a million octane with that compression? #2will that kind of compression break other things like rods and gaskets? #3 is this going to DEMAND a different cam and/or carb too?

**Nevermind guys, if i wasnt such as *** i would have searched first.... i really wanted to run it since there is one on ebay right now for $54 delivered... but after reading more i realize, im just going to have issues**
