Yeah, vehicle laws are all different from province to province. Ontario unfortunately has some of the most strict driving laws in the world.

As long as the VIN runs clean on the MTO system. You will be issued a new ownership and you can purchase insurance.

We have our insurance through Statefarm and we pay less than $9.00 a month for most, one as low as $3.50.

We have liability insurance anyway so for us that wasn't an issue, but I do believe in carrying insurance on the machines since we do ride on public land and that way we never have worry about getting "caught". We did have a run in with an officer at a riding location in Southern Ontario who was "CERTAIN" that you couldn't get insurance for trikes. He was very surprised and my Brother in-law had quite a long chat with him that day.

It's a small amount of money/year to ensure we are all above board.
    Nice! Thanks for the info!

To the best of our knowledge it was sometime in the mid 80's when ownerships came into play. I'm not sure where you'd be able to find out which years came with titles or not... doe anyone else know?

I have gone through the process of getting titles for 5 of my bikes now, 3 trikes, and 2 old dirtbikes. Here in Nova Scotia you can go to service nova scotia's website and print off the "off highway vehicle registration form". Next you need to get in contact with your local RCMP, department of natural resources, and I have used just recently the Halifax regional police (they came right to my house), or anyone who is considered a peace officer. They will look at the vin numbers on your bike and fill it out on your form, next they will run those numbers through their computer and make sure that they aren't stolen, if all is well they will sign off on the form and give it back to you. Next you need to go to service nova scotia with said form and fill out your information on it (your address, master number off your license, person you bought it from, reason for not having title or getting it from previous owner, how much you paid for it.....). Do not make any mistakes filling out this form or scratch out anything if you make a mistake, it makes the paperwork VOID! Then it's just a matter of paying the taxes on the purchase price and they print you a title for the bike, then you can get your plate and sticker and pay your trail fee, it's quite easy actually, with a little time invested I have the peace of mind riding my bikes with all my proper paperwork.
For insurance on my 86 Tri Z it costs me $128.00 dollars per year and my insurance company knows it's a 2 stroke race trike, pretty reasonable if you ask me.
    Hope this helps.
Also it helps to have a bill of sale when you go to service nova scotia, makes life a lot easier.

my 1980 honda 185 has an ownership with it so even the early trikes i believe should have an ownership. I am also in southern ontario and may need to get an ownership for a 85 200x so this thread is helping me decide what to do with it. thanks

For those pondering insurance, I called State Farm. They quoted me, for my 85 200m, $109 per year for insurance. That includes fire/theft and the basic comprehensive (driving) insurance. Without the fire/theft the price goes down to just over $80 year. I am stopping by their office tommorrow to take out a policy!

If your in Ontario without an ownership, getting one is quite easy. I got my 200m without a title, but I did get a signed reciept from the seller with his name and address. That needed to be notorized. I just went to the town office and got the town clerk to do that for me - free of charge! Take that same reciept to the dmv and they will run the vin. If it comes up clean the cost is $15 for the ownership and $20 for a plate. Took all of a few hours to do.

Apparently some of the Vehicle Licence offices in Southwestern Ontario have Notary Public's on site, but you have to know to ask for their services as they don't advertise. If you are in this situation it'd be worth a call to your local office and see if they can take care of it on site for your in one step.

So have any of you ever got a stolen bike?
I allready know my 1984 and first 1985 tecate frame was all good. Around here all people want to do is go to the busyest parts to ride on. Hardly ever a ride on less traveled roads. Thats where I go.

Hmmmm, I have only had paperwork on my Foreman and Moto 4, the rest no bill of sales, nothing. My 81 250r didn't even have a VIN left on it. But they are suppose to be cracking down on insurance around here for bikes aswell.

I was told that after a certent amount of time, the vehicle looses the Stolen tag and you can regester it again with no trouble. Anyone ever heard of this?

This is the only form that I have used, and have used it successfully 5 times now. You can either print it off the net or get them at the dmv, and as I said before, be careful because if you make a mistake on it the form is then void. I have heard the same thing about bikes being taken off the "stolen list" after 2 years or something like that, but I have only heard that from friends, I have no evidence of that being true.
