Question for fellow trike owners in Ontario

I have been riding without insurance since I bought my trike because i've been told its just not worth it. The premiums would be much more than the trike is worth. But I was told today by a friend that I could be charged up to $5000 if I was stopped while riding on public land and asked for proof of insurance and failed to produce it. So I looked it up, and its true. Needless to say, i'm seriously considering never riding on public land again, unless I can somehow find insurance at a reasonable price.

Does anyone have insurance on their trikes in Ontario? If so, what company do you get it ffrom and how much is it? I have heard that same companies have cheap rates, but I can't seem to locate any. It would really suck to have to stop riding my trike and just use the quad.

I have insurance on my 350x, I think it costs me about $24 a month. I used my same insurance company that I use for my house and auto. When I asked about insurance, they kept on saying atv and I just ignored them and and didn'y say anything. I've also heard that state farm with carry the atc insurance as well.

How did you find this out and where did you look this up? This is all news to me. I've been riding for quite a while now without insurance. I'd like to research this more...

I'm already with State Farm, so naturally i'd go there first.

Just ask your agent for Offroad ATV liability insurance, If they don't know anything about it find a new agent, its only been the law for the last 20 yrs or so. we're with State farm as well. All you should need is the VIN and copy of ownership. If you don't have an ownership that could be a bigger fine.

Here in Idaho USA you are suppose to carry liabilty insurance as well. I had insurance with Progressive on my Rancher. Right now I don't have any insurance on any of the ATV's.

    Heres where I found it:

    http://www.oftr.ca/page.php?id=644

But I also found this tonight:

    http://www.northernlife.ca/News/Spor...y=08-01-07-atv

Its possible that they messed up the minimum $5000 fine for driving a car without insurance with the $265 fine the second source says is for driving an atv without? That definitly sounds more reasonable. Theres nothing on the MTO website about mandatory insurance, but most government websites suck.

Either way, liability insurance is mandatory, so is registering the trike and having a plate on it. If it was a quad I would'nt worry about it as much because those are a common sight to cops, but a trike will catch their attention, and they know insurance is hard to get on them so it's almost guaranteed they're going to stop you.

I don't have an ownership for my trike. The guy I bought it from said he never recieved the ownership from who he bought it from either. I trust him that its not stolen because it was a friend I got it from. The ownership was lost somewhere down the line. I don't know if I could register the trike even if I wanted to. Honestly, would they even expect someone to have the ownership for a 26 year old trike they bought for a few hundred bucks?? Its ridiculous.

acidburn is right, 5k is for motorized vehicles on a HIGHWAY, cars, trucks, motorcycles etc. No insurance on a atv, quad etc with 6 wheels or less is/was about 300 bucks, might have gone up in the last while though, but for sure under 500 bucks.

My trike has no title either Chaps80,

Does anyone know what exactly came with a Honda ATC new in Ontario? Was it a title from the Ministry? or maybe an invoice or ownership card?? that the owner could take to the ministry for a title

I heard stuff built before 1985 or somewhere around there maybe 84 you can go in and just sign an affidavit to receive a title? (after they make sure it isn't stolen)

Also someone told me about getting a used vehicle package, this would list any registered owners including the current registrant and you could attempt contacting the person about the title

Any of you Ontario guys on here have any experience with this stuff?

Well I live in Nova Scotia and cops never said anything about insurance. All 60 rec vehicles I have owned never had a plate or papers. And deffinatly had no insurance. Around here we use the "they were banned cause there dangerous, now you want me to insure it" tactic.

It is actually very easy to gain a title for an ATC in Ontario. You will only need to sign an affidavit from a lawyer or "notary public" stating that the owner you purchased it from did not have an original title (since they were not required when the vehicles were produced), and that you have no knowledge of the vehicle being stolen. As long as the VIN runs clean on the MTO system. You will be issued a new ownership and you can purchase insurance.

We have our insurance through Statefarm and we pay less than $9.00 a month for most, one as low as $3.50.

We have liability insurance anyway so for us that wasn't an issue, but I do believe in carrying insurance on the machines since we do ride on public land and that way we never have worry about getting "caught". We did have a run in with an officer at a riding location in Southern Ontario who was "CERTAIN" that you couldn't get insurance for trikes. He was very surprised and my Brother in-law had quite a long chat with him that day.

It's a small amount of money/year to ensure we are all above board.

Thats what I figured after reading that second article. It says the fine is $265. For that i'd risk it. haha

    Thanks Shannonw,

I take it you have successfully acquired an ownership from the MTO with only a bill of sale and signed affidavit ?

What exactly do you mean by " they were not required when the vehicles were produced " ?

My 1983 200x didn't come with a title from the dealer new ?
