    86R doesn't like starting in the cold...normal?

    Hey guys;

    Took my 86R out the last couple of days, weather has been warming up, but it's still below 0C. First day, took well over a dozen kicks to start, but I thought it was normal because it was sitting for a few months, but then it takes the same for the next few days? Warm it starts on the first kick.

    Yes, choke is on. Gas is at 32:1 and fresh. Temp is -10 to 0C.

    In the summer it fires after 2 kicks religiously. Just wondering if putting in a new stator and working on getting a hotter spark would help?

    Is this normal for starting a 250R? I've had other 2 strokes that didn't seem so stubborn to start in the winter.

    It may be normal if it is that cold. How long ago did you replace the spark plug? That would be a good place to start. It could also be a partialy cloged pilot jet (starter jet) in the carb, that is pretty common too. Are you running a fuel filter? Replacing the plug with a hotter one will always increase the risk of burning a hole in the piston crown. I would try a new plug and possibly carb cleaning first.

    If your jetting is right and the electical is in good shape, a 2-stroke should fire pretty easily in any weather. In cold weather, most 2-strokes need to be richened up a bit.

    It's a brand new carb, from last summer and plug was brand new (just put in)..I am wondering about the rest of the electrical, but spark is fine. Thinking about a new stator from e-bay might be worth it, but the stator falls in specs. Wish it had a primer like me old ski-doo...

    If you didn't adjust your jetting for the cold weather, that is more likely the problem than something electrical.

    It should start right up. Maybe your pilot jet is too small.
