Ohm meter help please

i am trying to check to see if my pulse generator for my 85 350x is good or bad , and the more i check it with my ohm reader the more confused i get.

i believe spec is like 297-363 for resistance on it.

if i check the resistance with my ohm meter on 200K the reading is .2
if i check it on 20K the reading is .33
if i check it on 2K the reading is .345
and if i check it on 200 the reading is intermittent , 191 one time 55 the next 85 the next time , i dunno what the hell i am doing here .

I am not a damn electrican this is all new to me , i just don't understand why on 200k , 20k , 2k it will give me a reading and the reading will stay on the screen till i pull out the 2 pins , but on the 200 setting it will give me a reading and then go blank , and then i have to pull them out and stick them back in and it will give me a totall different reading for a second. Anyone understand this and know what reading i use to determine if i am out of spec or not ?

i got it at lowe's it was only like $30.00

If you can, borrow a Fluke meter from someone. Those ones you get at Lowes or Wal-mart are junk, I have never seen one give accurate readings.

Where abouts in NY are you? If you not to far from me I could bring one of my meters up.

yeah i got some electrician friends maybee they will have a fluke or a better one. I am like 6 hours from you , i am 2 and a half hours north of syracuse ! lol

Been a while since I used and old school meter, I got very lazy and bought an auto ranging meter. But I believe you should set your meter to 2K--that will read between infinite(open circuit) and 1999 OHMS. Looks like your in the correct range. If you unsure return that unit to Lowe's and buy an auto ranging one, bring it home use it then return it. Also make sure you black probe is in the COM and the red is in the OHM. Hope this helps and hope I remembered correctly?? It's probably blanking because it's over ranging.

You always start on the lowest scale possible. If it shows up as zero, you go up to the next setting. The higher your setting the less accurate your reading....
