HELP with year on HONDA ATC 200es

My question is regarding a 3 wheeler I just bought. The man claims it's an 85. Told me it smoked pretty bad, that the rings needed to be changed. Foolishly I bought it anyway without checking out my area first to see if any worked on 3 wheelers, I just assumed they did. Anyway, went to order parts for an 85 200es and see that no such creature exist. I looked at the bike by the handle bars and see ATC 200ES 198?. Yea, the last number on the year is worn or scratched off. It does not say Big Red on it anywhere. It has electric start, and reverse, has a pull cord as well. I have been told that is is an 82 by the Honda shop, an 83 by another shop and an 84 by most riding buddies, just want to make sure before I go buy parts and can't return them. Any help would be greatful!!

I'm not sure. First, I am female so I don't sound stupid saying I don't know..Ha Ha. I am not mechanically inclined at all, but willing to learn. How do I tell if it has shaft drive or chain? Would I be able to see the chain?

If it has pull start and reverse it is a 1984 Big Red 200ES. It shares a lot of parts with the 82 and 83 200E, except those had chain drive and the 84 has shaft. Check out www.hyperparts.com for piston rings and a top end kit.

Yes, you would be able to see the chain............. If you don't see a chain then it is a shaft drive. It will be an 84 then..... any other questions just give a yell

    Big Red 200ES

I have an '84 200ES - it has electric start, high and low-range gearing and reverse, and shaft drive. I believe 1984 is the only year that had all those features.

200es was only made in 84, so it's a good bet that's it.

If you want to be sure, find the 17 digit VIN on the frame neck and go here:

    fire,
all ES trikes were shaft drive. (including the 85-87 big reds) If you can pist a few photos of your trike we could probelby helpo identify the year. one way to tell if it's an 85+ is your while rack and rear fendersfold back to access the battery and air box area then it's an 85-87. if not, it's probebly the 84. the 84 had a 200cc motor and the 85-87 had a 250cc motor. lets hope it's an 85+ as there's more parts for it than the 84.
