Well I decided to try and get my 85 250r fixed up a little for my maiden voyage to TF and possibly Smith Road. So I had to do something about the rearend, axle is tweaked a little, rotor shot, brake hub and wheel hubs have slop. So I was undecided which route to take on this rearend rebuild and 85 seems to be the odd year out so I ended up going with the 86 style setup. So I called Mike at HRE and had him make me a 86 250r swinger, I ordered a Durablue Eliminator X-33 Pin Drive with Billet Hubs axle, then picked up a billet carrier and a Janssen anti-fade brake hub also some All Balls kits from Dads here on the boards(Thanks Dads). I already had the Proggressive Suspension rear shock spring from when I bought the fork springs.
I did run into a couple roadblocks already in the disassembly stage. The axle nut, some aftermarket locking type, will not loosen. I tried heating it with a propane torch and yanking on it with a 3ft pipe wrench a few times and it won't budge. So I decided to skip that and removed the chain, brake caliper and master and shock and linkage. Then I went for the swingarm pivot bolt, no go. I got it to turn and got the nut off but the bolt is stuck. I heated it with the propane torch and hit on the nut with the sledge and it didn't move. So I am gonna go get some Mapp gas and try heating with that and hit on it some more. If that fails might have to cut it out.
After I got the shock out I noticed it was stamped on the top "1989" so I am gonna guess its a 1989 trx shock and linkage that someone possibly swapped in before I got it. I am dropping my shock and the spring off later today to get rebuilt. Hopefully they can tell me if it is a 1989 shock or not when I take it in. So here are some pics of my new goodies![]()
