Excellent fab work!! but those plates that attach to the pivot tubes dont appear to offer much lateral strength

Hey cr480r, you are correct, the plates I'm using don't offer much in the way of support for a side load. They are 3/8" thick and are about six inches apart so they are stronger than you might think. However, they may not be strong enough for the side loads a 3wheeler encounters while turning. A 2wheeler on the other hand, has to lean to make it around a corner or it will fall over. The leaning transfers that side load into a force that is perpindicular to the pivot of the swingarm and therefore, in a direction that these plates are very strong. The 2wheeler may encounter a large side load in a crash situation, but if the plates bent instead of my aluminum frame cracking, I'd be a happy camper!

but they are also somewhat long and have a big hole cut in the center.. but I guess if they flex too much you could always add a gusset to tie them together

I understand the loads being applied, but do you plan to ever jump or bang through any whoops? motorcycles dont always fly straight... the oem swingarm is a very stout peice for a reason... yours may appear like a fatcat, but its still a crf450 and should be quite a performer..

Well, I've given some thought to this whole swingarm strength issue. I've come to the realization that it does not matter if I'm right or wrong about it's strength. Although it seems unfathomable at the moment, I might one day want to sell this creation. It wont' matter if indeed the swingarm is strong or not, what matters is that the potential customer thinks it is. Rather than argue the point, I'd like to make something people think is cool and safe. Hopefully I'll not get stuck with something I can't get rid of should I ever decide to sell it.

So, I'm gonna add some gussets to the swingarm and beef it up a little.

Stay tuned for more pics. I plan on spending some time on the beast this weekend!!!

i know companies are out there making cr500 and kx500 conversions for the fat tires.

Good to see you are going to add more meat to the swingarm. Better overbuilt than Underbuilt!

Amazing fab skills. I wish i had the ability to engineer and execute such things. I applaude this project and can't wait to see it's completion. Seems you work in a very efficient manor, and major fabricated components come together very quickly. ( swingarm, linkage, tripples, jackshaft) One question though....... Will the rear tire clear the exhaust can?
