    350 & 454

is there any way to get a 350 engine to run like or overpower a modified 454? i ask because theres a guy(more like child) who said that 454 sucks beacuse you can't bore them, and do other modifications. yea right, and when i tried explaining it to him, he said "uh no you can't" and then i asked him y and he didn't say anything else. He also took a picture off ebay of a 72 chevelle ss, very nice-chrome rims, restored, the hole nine yards-and said he got it for 3400. he's a lying sacka sh!t. he also took a picture of a guy riding a banshee of the yamaha website and said to my friend it was him. just recently he said he found a 98 rm 125 for 600 but when someone he told wanted to buy it, it mysteriously wasn't for sale. 2 years ago, he also said he had a, get this, a "Big Bear Racing series 400 three wheeler" WTF??? I think he's been :smokin somethin wierd. so if anyone nows, please tell. sorry for my little rant, i just hate people that jack up their own dreams to impress people.

Yes you can bore a 454. I think you can bore it out to a 468 or possibly more. But a 350 you can definitely build up to beat a slighty modified 454. Cam, bore, stiffer valve springs port and polish.. the whole nine yards. Car Craft did a thing on that like 2 years ago and the 350 cam out on top it was more efficient in $$$ and made just about the same power. also gearing matters in your rear. It can go on forever.

The 454 is definatley more potent stock, but the 350 is no slouch.
when you look at like 70's-80's trucks the 454 was about the most badass motor there was next to the 460.

The 350 can be bored to .080 MAXIUM, and I'm assuming it's the same for the 454. I see a lot of .060 454's and 350's.

Now for power. No other motor will probably ever have as stong of an aftermarket as the 350, thats hard to compete with. Look at the ZZ430 crate motor. 430 HP stock with a 3 year 30,000 mile warranty, hard to compete with, I'm not sure what a 454 crate motor costed or made horsepower wise, but I'm sure its more. A 454 with intake, carb, cam and headers properly tuned should make at least make 500, if not closer to 600. A 350 with heads, rods, pistons, cam, intake, headers and other misc. parts will make 500 relably. A stroker crank, and some more mods, and it will be up around 600.

No, a 350 is a small block (shares heads with 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 383, and 400); a 454 is a big block (shares heads with 396, 427, 468, 496, 502, and I think 377 was a big block too). Blocks and cranks are all different for the most part, though some motors are made by putting a crank from one motor into a different motor, for example, a 383 is a 350 with crank from a 400, a 302 chevy is a 327 with a crank from a 283 I believe (these were the motors in the first Z28 Camaros.

About the only things I can think of that would be interchangeable between big blocks and small blocks is the carburator, a few bolts, maybe the oil fill hole cap in the head cover, and MAYBE the dipstick, but it most likely wouldn't read right.

im not sure about the 302 stroker John...but the 377 is a small block 400 with 350 crank and heads...hemi your HP ratings seem a little high and the 70s-80s were mostly smoggers...ya gotta go older to get the real musle

Depends on what you would like to call "stock". Stock is considered anything that was or is available through the factory, both as parts and complete assemblies.
The 350 was available from the factory with 145 horses in 72 for the basic grocery getter to 350 horses in the 69 Corvette. The 454 was available with a sleepy 235 horses to the potent 71 425 horse LS-6. The upper end of the HP ratings aren't really know as the factorys fudged the numbers in order to slide the engines past nervous insurance companies.
Also when lining up 2 engines, tire size, gearing, vehicle weight transmission and driver skill to name a few variable factors, all come into play.
So, not to give creedence to your "friend", but it is very likely that a "stock" 350 horse-350 Vette will kill a 230 horse-454 powered 9 passenger Caprice station wagon.

The 70 LS6 was 450 horsepower it says it right on the air cleaner. I agree with whoever said that you have to go older to get the real muscle the mid 70's to 80's were just a big pile of crap.

Yes my ratings were a little high (i read to many magazines) but thats with all the smog trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro taken out/off.

The difference between a big block is the deck height, and the size of the main bearings and caps, and the crank size and strength. There are a lot of other oubious things Big blocks have different from small blocks, but thats the main differences. Big blocks often times don't weigh all that much more than small blocks when put together. A 350 with iron heads and block ready to run weigh about the same as a 455 with iron heads and block ready to run.

Also, most of your 350's and 454 will come from the 70's and 80's, as well as your transmissions. A few modifications and they run well, just the factory versions of the motors wern't that great.
