    I have a 1987 atc 200x

hey guys hows it goin....about 3 years ago i started a atc 200x project....when i got the bike it was total junk.....the motor was trashed but the frame and chasis was in real good shape....but for some reason i saw potential and gave the old boy 100 dollars for it.....well at first i was goin to rebuild the motor but as i was lookn online for parts i found a brand new looking engine......it was about 500 dollars and i said im goin to try it....well when i got it i was highly impressed....it was so clean i would of sat my dinner on it and ate right off of it.....like if it was used you couldnt tell at all.....but anyway I did a bunch of stuff to the chassis because it sat outside for a year before i bought it and it had alot of ceased up bearings and things like that.....well finally i got it together.....rode it alot but the forks were junked out and they finally ceased up....well I went and joined the army and bro took over the project....he found a really good used pair of forks online for hardly nothing and threw them on there....well when i went home i rode it and loved it all over again so i have decided to finish the restore up...I'm in iraq right now and im just ordering parts off ebay and having them sent home to my bro....oh ya and by the way my bro bought a frame off ebay that was completely powder coated silver and looks like new ......so hes goin to be changeing frames here pretty soon...well here are the questions i have right now...
#1 when we were getting chains and sprockets we came to find out that the rear end sprocket had to be a 85 or lower year because the sprocket mount hub was off a 1985 atc 200x...but the truth is i dont know what parts the guy changed....i dont know if he replaced the swing arm also to a 1985 or not...and if so whats the diffrence is there?....and if there isnt a diffrence and i wanted to go back to a 1987 sprocket hub what would i run into? is the axles a diffrent diameter or anything like that?...what all would I have to change...is it just a diffrent rear sprocket mount hub and thats it? would there be any other diffrence is what im tryn to ask? Because i would rather go to the 1987 model sprocket mount because being i had to go to the 1985 model it geared it diffrently....like by a couple teeth.....it also seemed to have screwed up the chain tensor tensioning capablilitys....i dont know? but can anyone anwser me on all this....
#2 i want to buy a plastic tank for my 1987 atc 200x off ebay but they say there tank is only for 1983-1985....is there really that much of a diffrence or could someone make it work if there is one?
#3 same with the front and rear fender...they say its for 1983-1985...is there to much of a diffrence for it to work...thanks.....
#4 i have my eyes on a brand new rear exle that is 5 inches longer than stock...which would add 2.5 inches on both sides for more rear axle width....i have always wanted to change the rear axle out and put a wider one in...but once again its for a 1983-1985...will it work with my swingarm.....i mean i figure it will because i have all them 1985 parts in the rear end already....thanks and help will be greatly appreciated...
I mean really...what is the big diffrence in years? they look the same to me...i know the motor is diffrent tho....i know that....

You probably just have an 83-85 rear axle installed in an 86/87 carrier.

The 85 swinger does not have an adjustment for the chain, the bearings are pressed right in the swinger.

The 83-85 axles work, but may need shimming or a change to the bolts so that they clear the carrier. Some guys slightly grind the carrier but I'm not a fan of that. You must be looking at the G force axle?

The front fenders can swap, but the rears will not mount up or line up correctly unless they are 86/87 specific. They are still available, there just a bit more expensive.

Same with the tank, the 85 does not fit correctly so find one you can make rust free and coat it. IDK if they even make a plastic tank for an 86/87, I never looked into them.

Pictures will get you allot more responses

no its made by nasa or something close to that when it comes to the rear axle i cant remeber and im in a hurry......but man that sucks about the rear plastic and tank.....what am i goin to do now? the tank is rusted and had been patched with JB weld and has had a coating of that stuff that covers the rust up but looks like crap and probably well start leaking again at some point...the rear fenders are not to bad but I really want to get some....was the 1987 a really rare year or somthing??? because its hard to find part for.....and what exactly makes it so diffrent form all the other years...

oh ya...also...if the 1985 axle is installed in a 1987 carrier wouldnt all the things that are already done too make that work interchange with new axle longer axle?

I'm sorry that your in a hurry. You can't restore a 25YO trike and get all your answers immediately. You really need to poke around and nail down each problem as they come.

There is a "search" button that goes over everything we've talked about and you won't have to wait for an answer.

The 87 had a fatter kickstart shaft, different shrouds and griffics, and some small and insignificant internal changes. One of which was a bad change, your 3rd gear is very prone to snapping......

They made quite a few less in 87, but 86 is just as good and better toi me when just a few 87 parts are used as I'm a rider........

I like the 86 motor with the 87 kickstart parts, clutch part and oil orifices.

    87 is the weak 3rd gear, I have 3 broken 87 motors......

You can run red plastic if you want, stock was white but to each there own

Look below, in my signature and click on the 86 200X build, you'll find quite a bit of info on the 200X in there
