I finally got my 350x running after being down due to a bad head. I have adjusted the valves to the proper specs and it makes a really loud clicking noise. I double checked and made sure it was timed correctly before everything was put back together. It runs great except for the noise. Any ideas on what could be the cause of this??

cam chain? did you replace the cam chain or just rebuild the top end with the same chain?
Looking for some smaller style tires like the r's have, just 2 back tires. pm please.

I rebuilt the engine with the same cam chain. Could a new chain fix my problem? It is the same chain that's been in there I'm guessing since this motor was assembled in 1985.Originally Posted by Lukeatc185

if i remeber correctly the 350x dosent have a tension bolt for the cam chain like my 185s does, i remeber reading a simular post on here and he had to replace his cam chain to get rid of a loud clicking noise from his top end. my 185s you just tighten the bolt while its running until it stops.

I guess I will be purchasing a new cam chain off of ebay. I seen some nice D.I.D cam chains on there not long ago for around $70 or so. Anything else I need to replace while I'm inside the motor again?

your cam bearings? were they nice and snug? no rattling or play?

The bearings looked good, cam should not have any play at all. It was brand new just three years ago and this is a completely different head, way better shape than the one it replaced. I noticed when I put the motor back together that the cam chain tensioner was very easy to slide in. Didn't act like it tightened the chain at all. I remember it used to be quite tough to put back in. So this is probably the culprit?

Well I don't think a recording will work with the sound of the exhaust interfering. I am just going to buy a new cam chain because of the fact that it has not ever been changed out and from looking at other topics on this forum it sounds like a new chain was the remedy for the clicking sound in other people's bikes.

on my 200x it was the cdi makeing that nosie i found that the dowel pin that holds the cdi on the cam was missing and the cdi was loose

ALL of these old 4 strokes need a cam chain, guide and tensioner guide.
They may not all be available, GR84wheelin on EBAY seems to part allot of crate motors, look to him if you must but do change all 3 parts.
Don't overlook the oil pump, take it apart and see if it's in spec.
If it's worn, buy a new 300EX oil pump and with some small mods it will work perfect.
