84 200ES Timing chain and sprocket

I can not seem to install the timing chain onto the sprocket, there must be a half inch until it will fit on the cam. I have tightened the adjuster and loosened it took it off and pushed the rod down as far as it would go but it's just not enough. The service manual was no help, it just said to put it on (gee thanks.) Anyone have a nice trick for this or know what i am doing wrong. Thanks

I don't believe it's too small because it was the one that was on there. The pulse generator weights went and it made a groove in the camshaft so i got a new camshaft and pulse generator.
