    1985 110 ATC Carb and Shifting Problems

    New member here and would appreciate any help. I'm not a mechanic but try to fix anything I can.
    I found a true barn find 1985 Honda 110 ATC at a local auction that is in mint condition. It fired up on the first pull and ran great but would not idle. I bought a rebuild kit and that fixed the idle problem but now it stumbles at the beginning of the throttle once warmed up. I have played with the othe adjustment screw (not the idle screw) but can't seem to dial it in?
    My other problem is after riding around today it suddenly won't go into gear? I can feel it engage but it won't move. One thing I noticed when I bought it is that the rear wheels had a little play in them. I could grab a tire with both hands and it would rattle back and forth like it had a bad bearing or something?

    Have you tightened the nuts on the tires? Hopefully the hubs haven't spun down to nothing.

    As for the carb the shop manual says to screw it in all the way and then back it out 1 7/8 then fire it up and warm up the engine good. After it is warm screw it back in until the engine starts to sputter or miss then back it out 1 full turn. That procedure usually works pretty good for me. And if the wheel nuts are the same as a 200 they will have a key that you have to take out before tightening them. There is a spline on the axle that has to lock into the hub hopefully the hub isn't too worn down I believe they are kind of expensive for new ones.

    I haven't had time to take anything apart yet but I thought this info might help someone diagnose what is broke. The last time I drove the the 110 I had it in low gear riding around in the brush. It seemed harder than usual to get it to shift gears. I had to push further up or down to get it to engage. I changed to Hi gear to drive down the road on the way home and still was hard to get into gears. I downshifted to neutral to put it back into low to go up my driveway and when I tried to put it into first gear it would just seem to engage but didnt. I continued to shift up and down making an engage sound but it didn't. The neutral indicator shows that it is in gear but seems to be in neutral. Sorry for the novel but thought a good description would hep.

    clutch could be slipping, hubs could be stripped on the axle,
    Looking for some smaller style tires like the r's have, just 2 back tires. pm please.

    You might not have the hi/lo lever all the way engaged. Sometimes you have to rock the trike back and forth to get the lever to engage all the way. Also the chain may have some slop in it. What about the air filter? You may want to change a 20 some year old air filter for a new one, that might help your stumbling problem. Also when you changed your engine oil, did you remove your right side clutch cover and clean out you oil filter screen? Highly recommended also. Plus it won't hurt to change the oil again so soon on an engine that has set so long. Also if you used synthetic oil for your oil change, it is often too slippery for old clutches, so that also may be your clutch problem. Things to check. Also it would be a good idea to check your valve lash and give it a nice new spark plug and check your engine timing.

    I drained the oil, took off the right side cover & found a broken part which turned out to be a shift drum stopper. I searched the forum and it looks like I need to buy a clutch puller tool to replace the part. Should I replace anything else while I am in there? The oil screen is clean and in good condition. Should I replace any springs? O-rings? I have never taken appart a clutch before but it looks like I need to remove the 2 phillips screws on the front of the clutch assembly to get at the "special" nut that I need the removal tool?

    Well I replaced the stopper paw and adjusted the clutch and it shifts great. The wheels just needed to be tightened. The problem is that when I tighten the wheel as it should be I can't get the cotter pin in the hole so I have to loosen it which isn't completely tight. What should I do to get it tighter put another washer in there or something? As for the hesitation I can't figure it out. It doesn't do it when the motor is first started but after riding for a couple minutes the hesitation happens in the first part of the throttle. I have adjusted the carb screw and doesn't seem to help. Any other suggestions?

    Make sure you have a good clean air filter and all the boots and clamps are good no leaks . Air leaks on the intake side on 110s are sensitive and will cause them to idle rough and miss on the top end sometimes . If you have the correct washer and nut on the axle just tighten it up till it lines up . Sometimes you need a 1/2 breaker bar which works best for me .
