    crank seal question.

curous about something. my friend has 200m, was fine. he changes the oil and accidentally put 5w30 and now his crank seal likes a little bit, a mechanic told me the oil getting through ruins the seals. it hasint been ran since the oil change and it drips out very slowly.. is this true? if he goes back to the right oil will it still never seal?

The oil change shouldn't have mattered, I guess the 200M is a dry ignition?

So no oil on the left side (aside from Mr' Drip ) Is a 200E a pull start?

I can't see 5W30 ruining seals, sounds silly........ Of course some people run thicker oil to solve many problems, so who knows.....

I've seen guys mix gear oil and 10/40 to try and solve a worn ring issue

They are probably just old and dry and need to be changed.

IDK about that model, some you can change without splitting the case.

maybe its just a 200, it has a 200m sticker but it has pullstart. weird, he also used synthetic. i told him that was a bad idea also. could that have played a roll in the seals?

Please correct me if i am wrong

When running a thinner oil it will leak out of places with a wider tolerance. when the oil starts leaking it will create a siphoning effect which will draw the oil through. If you then switch back to thicker oil the siphon effect will then pull it through the smaller orfices causing seals to tear, stretch, etc.

is there no way we can completly drain the oil and try say blowing the seals from behind the flywheel?from what i can tell the seals are inside and hes screwed if we need to split the case. hes not finacially able tp do that right now.

You will not need to split the cases. just let the oil drain for a long time, tilting it, shaking it etc. then in a few days put the right oil in.

I have been handed down this theory by an old man. when we built are buggies we would buy a used engine that has been setting up about once a month. Since we always blew them. sometimes they would be frozen so we would use diesel to free them up. Afterwards we would have torential oil leaks. An old man came up one day and told us the reason for this is because of the siphon effect. He said to always free an engine up with something thicker than the oil. Came up with a concation and didnt have a leak since.
