    86 Tecate - Fork bushing question(s)

    It's been a while since I've logged on but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I need to replace the front fork bushings on my 86 tecate, but only the outer bushing (p/n 44065-1085) is available.

    Anybody know of another bushing to replace the inner bushing? (p/n 44018-1051)

    Or, does anybody have a disassembled fork laying around, maybe you could grab some measurements of the bushing on the inner fork pipe? Pivot Works makes a bushing that says for Kawi p/n 44018-1059 that measures, in MM, 44.6 x 46.6 x 19.8. I was thinking, if this bushing was close, but maybe too tall, I could have it machined down to fit?

    Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

    Also, pressing my luck but how about the dampening rod 'piston' ring? The isn't a part number that I'm aware of, just shows it as part of the dampening rod.

    I have been waiting some time for someone to point this out as it was pointed out to me a long time ago by a mechanic who i asked to rebuild my forks. He said a proper rebuild needed those bushings and well I had no idea what he was talking about since I just paid someone else. Then I realized the person I hired said nothing about them.

    I have some forks apart some where.

    I see part number - 44065-1085 BUSHING,FRONT FORK is ACTIVE

    Hello;

    Unfortunately p/n 44065-1081 [same as 44018-1051] just sold 4 days ago on ebay for only $11.50 each. You might contact them and ask if they have any more. Keep an eye on ebay for parts.

    As far as the damper rod seals go, you can remove one and put it in the tube. If it looks like it has around .020” gap pr less on the ends you are likely ok. One problem with doing this is that it might break when you try to remove it.

    You can get new ones made out of Nylon, Delrin or Teflon etc. if absolutely necessary. They might not work/seal quite as good as nos ones, but it is an option.

    I may have found a option since p/n 44065-1081 aka 44018-1051 is no longer available. Race Tech makes the bushings for the street bikes that use the same part #. According to this page, Race Tech should have what I need. http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php?topic=41665.0

    for those that are interested, the race tech p/n that should fit as 44018-1051 is FMBI 41201 P for the lower. This information is pending until I get some measurements, I will update once I know for sure.

    I got the Race Tech bushings and they are exactly the same as 44018-1051. I'm pretty excited! Side by side old (left) and new(right) and the new pair in the race tech package.

    A slight hiccup. The Race Tech bushings are a tiny bit thicker than stock. They fit perfectly in the lower tube by themselves and fit the upper, but with a gap. The old stock bushing was almost touching itself. My idea is to reduce the overall diameter of the recess for the bushing, thus closing the gap and allowing the bushing on the inner pipe to go in the lower fork tube. I'm guessing a few thousandths if that... Click image for larger version.
