    Tachometer on a 250R?

I'm going to try and put a tach on my R, anybody try this or know how many pulses the tach needs to be? I think it should be a 2 or 4, but I'm not sure. I've got an extra 2 pulse I'm going to try. Now the next thing I'm wondering about, is the lack of a voltage regulator, was there one originally on my R? I also have an extra regulator if needed. The reason I want a tach is so I don't over rev the engine, I'm used to having a CVT and tach on my sleds, this shifting business is new to me. Every time I hit the power band I keep thinking I'm going to over rev the engine and throw a rod or something. Thanks

a wise man once told me....hold it wide open till you see god....then shift

i wouldn't worry about it, it should just be a seat of the pants thing.

till you look at the tack you'll be past the shift anyway

lol, It just seems like when she kicks in and spools up so fast, I am reluctant to keep going into the powerband very far. Sounds like the rpms are waaay high, what is the max operating RPM? I'm used to things running at like 7000-8300 in my sleds. Maybe the fact that I just completely rebuilt the engine has me a bit paranoid.

i have no idea exactly what a atv revs out at but i know a 2 stroke has to be over 10,000

12-14,000 is sticking out in my mind for some reason

Thats awsome, when you get your tach put on let the rest of us know how you did it and how it turned out.
Having a tach is one of those things where you dont NEED one to drive, but it sure makes for a fun time having one. I have one in my old '83 Gmc Pickup. I've looked at the setups they have for the quads now (mph meter, tach, odometer, trip meter, average speed, ride time) and wished there was some way I could stick one of those on my 250r.

I don't know anything about tachs but they sell one's for single cylinder engine's. 2 or 4 stroke Don't know.. but might look into it.

Let us know what it revs at will yeah?

I think a shift light would work better, if you are having a hard time determining when to shift.

I agree with the seat of the pants thing, but I am also curious how many rpm's these things are turning. I have thought about putting a tach on mine.

I would say, that you can feel the power band, and when you shift, you want the next gear to already be in the power band (when going all out). Which means, the front wheel may never be on the ground, and you can observe planes over head

you got an air foooler right? shorter stroke on those, insane fast and high revs! my 300 always sounded like a demon, felt like it was revving way past what my 85 does, just nail it!

I agree its a ceet of the pants sort of thing. Just get a little ceet time on and you will get it. I like watching friends try my tecate because they all ride thumpers and they shift way before the powerband. I tell them they are shifting too early and they still shift to soon.

I stole a tach out a sled, which was a 2 pulse I think, and it actually works. I just hooked her up to the empty headlight socket, now can turn the tach on and off with the headlight switch. It's just ghetto rigged on with hoseclamps and zip ties. I went for a short ride, and was surprised to find the RPM a lot less than I thought it was when hitting the powerband, around 6000-7000. I think it's just the loudness and maybe the small exhaust leak that make it sound like it's running a lot faster than it really is.

i have done quite alot of work on this topic and what i have found is the Honda Pilot tach works great on a 250R (see pics) it is the same size as the atc tach so mounts up quite nice the only problem is they are RARE as rare as the atc tach so not really a option so i looked around for a another tach that would work i tried most road and outboard options none of that worked proper (either read high or low) the only tach that worked perfectly was from a NSR125 or NSR250 but you guys didn't get them bikes also it comes in a speedo/tach combo which you need to recan into a single which i have not been able to do yet.......not tried to hard as i have been busy lately if anyone wants to see one get me a shout and i'll dig one out....
