    Question 85 250r 5 speed?

So we stop hijacking ChrisD's thread. Was there in fact 85 250Rs that came with 5 speed transmissions? Supposedly Craig at Cal ATV can confirm this but he is not in today. I guess we'll find out tomorrow. If anyone can give vin numbers of these models that would help. Can anyone else recall seeing or riding an 85 with a 5 speed? I could swear that a friend of mine used to have one of these when I was about 16 and I do remember it being an early model 85.

Okay guys, I finally have an answer for you. I got a hold of Craig today he said " there was in fact 85 ATC250Rs that came from the factory with 5 speeds. The first units that came out late in 84 had them. Nobody wanted them because they knew the 6 speeds were coming. There are very very few of them around." Craig says he has seen them a couple times. This also verifies that the one I had seen and ridden when I was younger was definitely a 5 speed and I'm not going crazy. I know ther are going to be plenty of you that are going to argue this. Don't bother, Craig's been in the used ATV parts biz for years and has seen alot. Whoever on here that has dealt with CAL ATV knows that they have always specialized in 250R parts, they would know. Just cause someone is an ebay guru doesn't give them a phd in 250Rs.

Craig also told me to pass a message on to everybody here. CAL ATV is no longer a fulltime business for the time being. The economy is kickin everyone's ass right now and everyone there has other jobs on the side to make ends meet. They currently don't have anyone there to answer the phones full time, so they will be very hard to get a hold of for the time being. He said the R parts are on ice for now. The business is not going under, they are just doing some restructuring and will be back on track in a couple months. So, please guys, don't bombard them with unnecessary questions or queries right now.

Racers usually take first gear out to shave weight, you dont need it racing anyways.

I've seen a 5 speed for sale before, by itself out of frame though. Was for a 250r. It was a long time ago and I have no way of verifying it.

There was thread on here a while back with a kid that had some sort of 5 speed racing tranny that could only be shifted up or some weird deal that everyone was telling him to get rid of.

that was drag cut you can do a 2-6 pattern or a 1-5 pattern and yes the will take the gear out or leave it in.. usually when they take it out they put a spacer in it ..you have to completely stop the bike before down shifting...hence overdrive tranny..shift up once and it..it will shift on its own up through the gears.. perfect for drag racing ..faster time's

my arch enemy has a drag cut in his sabertooth 500 and he left the gear in..

I dont really understand how the overdrive tranny works...how does it shift on its own???

Getting off topic, but the dogs on the trans gears are angle cut, so they can "slide mesh" together, and then they are sometimes also put together with springs between them so that when one is engaged, it snaps together the next one. Atleast thats how I understand it.
