    86 Tecate w/ 94 KDX250/ 93 KX250 engine, build thread.

I'll update the thread as it goes along. So far I've got the kdx exhaust fabbed up. I just need to finish the silencer. Once the exhaust is completed I'm going to figure out what to do for an air intake. Here's what I have so far.

So, what are the kdx 250 advantages? I thought I had heard they were a little tamer than the Tecate, but are they a 6 speed? Probably not counterbalanced as frame fitment would be an issue right?

I really like this idea as the KDX250 is a 5 speed wide ratio trans. Not counterbalanced.

So did the swingarm bolt and lower motor mounts and sprockets all line up making it a drop in motor? How about the front motor mounts?

What did you have to change on the pipe? just the stinger and silencer mid pipe section?

The Kick start lever splines were the same length as the KDX shaft?

I looked for a long time and can never find a 90's KDX250 near me for sale.

I'm also curious, what's the advantages of swapping one kxt for a kdx of the same displacement? I'm not too familiar with either engine.

This thread is what gave me the idea. I originally intended on doing this swap on a first gen. That went out the window when I acquired a second gen minus the engine. Power wise I'm not sure how it compares to the 86-87 engine, but I'm sure its comparable. I've seen claims of 42 hp with a kx head gasket and a pipe?

The pipe I had to relocate some brackets and the silencer took some cutting and rewelding. The kick start splines are shorter so I'm going to have to address that. All engine mounts line up perfectly. All I had to do was machine some spacers for the front mount. Swingarm and chain line up just like the original engine.

KDX advantage is the motor lasts forever, i had a kdx 200 it lasted as long or longer than a 4 stroke, i had a tecate and it was a typical race style kx, had to rebuild it alot. Im not sure if the 250 is like the 200 but the kdx200 is a amazing bike!

Totally different engines. The 250 is a tamed down version of the 88-90 kx 250, with a wide ratio transmission, heavier flywheel, and lightning coil.

Parts seem to be a lot easier to find for this engine vs. the tecate, since it was produced for seven years in one form or another.
