What causes excess carbon? On my 185s there is a small leak where the head pipe joins the muffler, there is black on the fender and on the grab bar. When i take the plug out it is heavily carboned up.

Running rich or oil ring is seized.

I think its probably running rich, i took the carb off and the fuel screw looks like its turned out too far.

does the exhaust smoke? Like a white blueish smoke? if so its burning oil. if not then your probably rich. if its super rich you might find it blowing black smoke when at very High rpm/rev limiter.
but hopefully your just running rich because thats easier and cheaper to fix =)
good luck

well if its smoking that means oil is getting in the combustion chamber and burning. its very common on our old trikes. it may just be a worn valve guide seal, or it could be worn piston rings.
either way you might as well replace both while you have the engine apart if you decide to take it apart. its something all our 24+ year old trikes come across. hopefully its not an immediate thing but sooner or later it will be time to rebuild it.

By the looks of the motor its never been torn into,I'll be the first i guess.I have a good piston and new rings from my 200s i might put in, the 200s cylinder is in really good shape too. Thanks for the help Mr_RPM.
