Rebuild the carb... I have no issues with my 85, and havent done the cold start work to it... Read this link. (I know, I know, its .org)

I'm with Thorpe. I have a 85 250es and have no cold start problems after a rebuild. First start of the coldest mornings with the choke on it fires up on two kicks.

That is for a 250es. Would it work for a 250sx ?

I have an 85 250sx and (for me) a carburetor rebuild kit was not enough to fix the cold start problem. Maybe it was the quality of the carburetor rebuild kit? either way, it did not work. For around 20 bucks, a carburetor rebuild kit may be worth it for you.
I put my 350x carburetor on the 250sx and decided to put a 400ex carburetor for my 350x.
The 250sx with the 350x carburetor not only gave the trike a performance increase, but the cold starting problem stopped.

I believe the carbs are the same as were the cold starting issues on the '85 250es and 250sx.

The 86/87 250SX carbs (Keihin 08 I believe) will start and run the best.
If you have mods, the 350X carb is the best you can do.......

I don't know what mods I would need. I was hoping the 350x would just kinda plug in there. So far the votes are all tied up 2-2-2

The 350x carburetor will plug in fine. No modifications at all.
You will have to unscrew the lever choke and then screw in your 250sx switch choke and then your all set.
the 350x carburetor fit perfect for me.

It's a quad that is like the 350x atc. Only 5 speed/with reverse and 250cc as opposed to 350. VERY similar to 300ex.
Need to find my airbox tube and rebuild the carb, but it's been working since I put it in. Had to cut the choke lever it half as it hit the starter's mounting bolts. But it's nice not worrying about choke plungers.

go with the 86 carb there must be a reson honda thought it was better than the old one the 350x carb was desined for more air flow but would be good to after a rejet

The one on my 85 works fine, if you were going to replace it I would go with a 350X carb since it would be an upgrade, or just rebuild the stock one. If you get a rebuild kit you want to make sure it has the right jets before installing them.
A lot of it comes down to money, if you get extra, throw a 350X carb on there, but if not the stock carb will work fine and costs very little to rebuild.

So let me get this straight as i too have cold start issues on my 85 sx. I have a 350x carb sitting around, so I can switch it out to the sx with no modifications for instillation or no modifications to the motor to handle the larger carb? And the chokes will switch out without modification? If so, what can I expect in increased power with the bigger carb? Sounds like a no brainer if it is that easy.

^^ Its not that easy... The 350X carb is good if you have mods... Exhaust, cam, no airbox, ect. Chokes do not interchange. There is info about fixing your cold start issue in this thread. Part #06161-HAO-305
Perhaps DC knows what size the cold jet can be drilled out to on these early carbs to fix the problem... (He is the SX/ES motor god!)
Also, from searching 3ww for a few minutes, guys have been using carb kit# 03-015 from Shindy for 250es and sx 1985, and is suppose to have the updated cold start jet.

^ It is not that easy. If you had an aftermarket exhaust and an open airbox lid then I would recommend it. IDK what you have??
Did I miss the "here are my mods" list?? EDIT - .080 on the starter jet fixes the starting issue. Grease the drill bit, have a ball..............
It's NOT an upgrade in relatively stock form, your letting more air in, more gas in and nothing that requires it. SOOOOOOOOO, it's my opinion (F the pole) that it won't do much unles you make other chages. At that point, it's a nice cheap upgrade and all you lose is the choke cable.
Thats my .02c

Do you mean .080, as in 80 thousandths for the cold start jet??
I did one years ago and kicking myself ever since for losing the drill and forgetting the size.
Thanks

it looks like the polls is saying go for the 250sx 1986 carb. The 350x sound nice but I don't have my bike moded for what its increased functionality would give me

Yes. .080 is 80 thousandths... A single drillbit seems cheaper than buying a different carb... (but what do I know) Modifying the cold start jet makes your current carb essentially the same as the 86 (with the cold start fix)
