so i got a nice 1985 200x from a neighbor down the road. he bored it 10 over, mild cam and i put a dg exhaust on it. its in really good shape and i only paid 500 buck for it. now the problem is that the kick start wont catch. he didnt want to trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro with it is why he sold it cheap. the gears on the kick starter just inside the cover are perfect and it isnt slipping on the shaft. Any ideas what in the hell it is?

Where the kicker itself bolts on to the shaft, the splines might be wore down, not stripped completely, enough to hold, but not enough to catch when downforce is applied. Check your Splines! First gen X's were notorious for kicker issues.

Looks like you get to split some cases and go digging. The Kicker assembly is inside the transmission of these things, thats why everyone bitches about the 200x. Read up on the stronger spring you can get for it and back cutting the teeth on the kicker gears so they have a positive engagement that wont slip.
