Ok, so I just drained the oil in my 85 250r and out came a small chip. here's pictures: (penny for reference)

The oil was pretty metallic looking but I used most of a quart of cheap oil and flushed it out. Its aluminum. It shifts through all the gears with no problem.

Any ideas?

God, thats always scary to find. You can flush the bottom ends with diesel fuel. run for about 30 seconds, then remove all fuel. Replace the diesel with oil, run for a little while, then change very soon, within 10 minutes. After that, run what ever oil you normaly do.

If it was my trike, i would take the clutch cover off and take a look around.

After thinking about it, i still can't figureout what that chuck came off of. I say take the clutch cover off, it may be visable and easy to fix. What ever broke.. will probably just continue to fall apart over time and destroy the rest of the tranny.

Check it with a magnet . If alum (piece of the case) you might be ok but if its a steel part it might be something important .

It looks to me from what I can see in the pictures to have fresh breaks on both sides. So more than likely there is another piece in there. Id tear it apart. Its not worth risking junking a motor that is getting harder to find every day by not taking any action.

My buddy changed the oil in his 200 big red and a small spring like whats in a ink pen fell out! Still runs and shifts fine... for now.

Looks like a big piece of 'ah Shlt' to me..!!! I'm with the other guys..tear it down before whatever that came off of blows to hell..

Might be tooth from kickstarter..just a rough guess

First off, thanks to everyone who offered advise. I pulled the clutch cover off and pulled the clutch basket and didn't see any damage. I pulled the motor out of the frame tonight and will work on splitting the cases in the next couple days...

good luck, I hope its dont cost you an arm and a leg to fix it.

Thanks hoosierlogger.

Does anyone know if the stator has to come off to split the cases? I got the 3 bolts off that go around the edge of the stator that you can get to with the flywheel on (not the ones that hold the stator on), plus the two long ones for the counter-balancer and all the bolts on the outside.

the flywheel has to come of to split the case and if you do you will need new berrings they dont like being pulled out and put back in

Gear tooth or part of a shift fork - my guess.......

Good luck!

Ok, so I feel good that I split the case and found NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE  but its also gets me that I went through all that for nothing. I guess the chip was from the land of magically appearing mystery chips.

here's the pics, the camera light does funny thing and makes it looks all dirty but it is clean. But whats up with the blue over spray??

I't kinda looks like the chip might have come from the area right of the blue overspray, but that could be the flash and silicone mix, also have you checked the bottom of the piston, I am assuming you have but check the inside of the bottom of it as well, that chip came from somewhere, maybe it has been in there a long time, and maybe not best to check every where

wait what the heck am I thinking oil in a 2 smoke is only in the tranny, dang 4 stroke mentality

i know what it is!!! i thought it looked familuar.... look at the bottom pic. the area between the 2 bearings look familuar? it was a left over casting peice that was not removed from the factory. seen this a few times. i totally forgot till i saw that image. take the peice and i bet you it drops pretty much right into that spot.

your lucky cause most of the ones that had it were damaged during the process and needed new bottom ends as it shattered gears and busted cases to peics. not fixable..

Thats probably DYKEM or blue ink.

Is it magnetic? Did you check the shift forks and all kickstart parts?

It came from something........

oscarmeyer, your answer seems to make the most sense but I just can't find any fresh breakage in there...

Did u ever find anything else out?

falloutboy
03-17-2011, 04:06 AM
Nope, I went through it twice on my own and had two people look at it with me at separate times at couldn't find anything. I got the motor put back together last weekend and almost have the install done.. Probably be starting it tomorrow

oscarmayer

ok. t was an alloy type part right? if so it was probebly from where i told you about which was that spot as a casting peice that was left in my accient and fell out later. you got really licky!!! hey change the oil pump out just to be safe.

I talked to Jason Hall and he said it doesn't seem like honda would have that poor of quality control.

As for the oil pump, I'm pretty sure these engines don't have one. its just a splash type system...

oscarmayer
03-18-2011, 08:23 AM
lol, it has an oil pump trust me. how else do you get oil all the way into the head? even the 70-125 lay down motors have a oil pump.

whom ever you talkd to is not totally accurate, no matter how good control someone has it's still human error. friday built bikes are just that. Friday build bikes...

Oil in a head on a 250R?????????????????????????????

Think Oscar, THINK!!

Name an older 2 stroke that has an oil pump??

my thinking exactly. the only oil pumps in a two stroke i know of are for the oil injection system where you don't have to mix the fuel which I would never rely on...

Anyway, I finished putting this thing back together last night and took it out today and it performed excellently.

put it back together and check every part you put in it dont matter where it came from if nothing is broke
