flat tracking tires

my local track up here in NH will let me run with them. its a 1/5 mile high bank clay oval. i run a 250r (86) all set up for ice racing. i have a 10 inch front wheel also. what tires and size would you guys suggest running (hoosier,american racer)?

I run Maxis orange label on our oval...1/5 not much bank tho

are you running with quads or trike only class? both are set ups or way different. If you want to just dabble in it Duro makes some good cheap tires to try it out first before you commit big money. I can give you specs. on what we did with our Tecates back when we ran trikes. Gearing and supension are way more important than tires to start. We ran Carlilse(sp) R/A to start with and they were no more than grooved garden tractor tires.

I think im going with the maxxis orange (ebay $140 new). What size do u think 18x10x10 or 18x8.5x10? Will the blue label wheels work or should I go red.

The hoosiers are way to much $.

I heard the duro's were not very good at this track.

I think i will most likely be running in the quad class unless we get enough trikes. Im good with the setup stuff, its a 310 flattracker r i have been ice racing with for 6 years.

No....on the Blue Labels

some tires no matter how careful you are or what new kind of ATV tire machine they use will bend them up installing tires....blue labels are WAY thin...I`ve bent three or four real easy....get the red at least...I`ve bent a blue label just by hammering into another guys wheels on the track and they bent like a pretzel....gocart wheels really

18x10x10 w/ offset blue labels would be the ticket. (stay off the walls though) what gear do you run on ice? we played with our gearing alot, depending on moisture and tire presure 2-4pounds on the left and 3 to 6 on the right.

im not a flat tracker i only did it once but i would bet the 8.5 wide would be alot better on a three wheeler than the 10 wide i would think your going to have to do alot more sliding than those guys on the four wheelers they look like there on rails. looks like you could run a pretty soft compound on that track without burning them up. nice wheeler

If you are still looking for a short track tank you can still get them from honda .About 190$ at service honda i put a picture of the part number up for you in case you need it they only come in black.

nice video... brings back good times. a slamed 4 stroke will be hard to beat even with your 310 kit. Like the other poster said " like rails", we had a guy w/a TC Racing 350x that we couldn't touch. The dang thing made so much torque out of the corners it would take us whole straightaway to run him back down. Mind you it wasn't close to stock and had the largest Lectron carb I've ever seen and we had no idea what Tom Carlson had done to the top half other than it went thru alot of alcohol. Looks to me your gonna need wheel speed and harder tire to run with the quads. They can run the softer compounds and not worry about highsiding in corners as much. You have a great looking R, I'm sure you will represent it well. I'll scan some of my old pics of My 85 Tecate all slamed and struted how we ran. It was a 300 with TDR reeds and Lectron carb, PSI pipe, 6in over swinger and RPM 4+axle,w/lead down the front down tubes. Nothing beats the smell of alcohol burnin strokes on a Saturday night, well one thing...Hope it helps

brd812- On the ice this year I had my best luck with 15x38 gearing. We raced on a 1/5 mile track like in the video but it was more rounded with longer corners and less of a straight. I had to shift into 5th in the middle of the straight and down shift to 4th going into the corners.The track in the video looks more like a paper clip shape. I played with gearing alot also for soft and hard ice (every option in the 14-15x36-38-39) I actually found something by mistake with my tire pressure,Left 14lb and right 8lb (i know, totally backwards) my forward bite coming off the turn was perfect but my entry getting in sucked. The racer in the vid running second with the blue 400 is more like a 460. I run with him on the ice side by side all day but the dirt might be different. I'm sure its a different feeling.

Poohbee1- After talking to some of the guys that race there and with me on the ice I decided to do the 18x8x10. I complaine about to much grip all winter so they said try the narrow tires. I really want a short track tank, was hoping for red but it might look pretty badazz with complete black plastic (i need new plastic anyways). What did you do for the mounts for the top of the shrouds.

I found that a year ago too. What's happening is you are making less screws have contact with the ice on the inside tire, and that helps you get it sideways. hurts you when braking though, because the trike wants to turn the other way. You wind up braking early, and then power on through the whole turn. I had problems with the quads out braking me, they got that extra wheel to lean on going in.

Where in NH are you, would love to come up sometime and race with you on the ice. Wouldn't mind giving that flat track a try too.

Great thread. We danced around 15/36 and 14/38 but our tracks had more banking and we had TT jumps to play with . Seems like alot of air presure for dirt. The track in my hometown has bowl in the corner and we would spin the beads on the right sides, until we sheet metal screws in the beads (we didn't have beadlocks yet). Hope you guys get enough in for a trike only class, it will save you some stress, but if not show the quad guys whats up. good luck
