big red beater woes!!

i feel like crying! i picked up this bigred awhile back for a beater workhorse, 200 bucks. it ran crappy, rear end was sloppy, bunch of minor stuff. i tore right into it, and got everything all set for assembly. Then i got on other things and it ended up sitting, till now. Spent the last week, all my spare time buttoning this back up. I call it a beater, but it is rather nice, other than the rear plastic:lol: This thing is ready to fire, all new fluids, plug, brakes, bearings, the works. I go to kick it, for the first time since i bought it, its locked up!!:mad: i drained the oil back when i picked it up, and in the mean time it clearly developed a little rust bond between the rings and cylinder walls. I'm really bummed:( i puled the plug and hosed some pb blaster in there. what do you guys think? any tricks, any possibility it may be ok? I guess i will find out! I'll try to find the link to the original thread!

You did right with the PB Blaster. As much as it stinks that stuff works great! I bought a junk Yamaha 200 once that had been sitting with water in it for who knows how long. When I drained the oil water rain out for about 20 seconds before any oil came out, The piston wouldnt budge with the pull rope. I filled the cylinder up with PB and the next day I put a ratchet on the flywheel bolt and was able to turn the motor over, To my surprize the motor fired right up and amazingly did not smoke at all!! It ran great but had a problem with the clutch locking up from rust for about the first couple hours of riding. A couple oil changes and it was fine.

Always wanted a 250 big red myself! haha, but the PB trick always worked for me, I got a motor that has been seized for probably 10+ years to run with a PB soak treatment.

I always used Marvel mystery oil but PB is just as good Old 82 BR had the same problem worked like a charm.

Transmission fluid works pretty good also. My brother and I freed up an old front end loader that was seized up with tranny fluid. Runs like a top now.

It will be just fine Rory. Soak her,and pull the flywheel bolt plug. Put a 17 on her and pop her free. She'll tell you quick if anythings hurt ,,with some blue smoke : )
I bet she'll give you Years of trouble free service!!

wow must have been sitting a while i just bought an xl600 with tons of rust in the gas tank and carb and I'm assuming it was rusty inside the cylinder it smokes

well, i got the cylinder free, was pretty easy, but i dont think i'm getting any spark, so i have to take a look at the electrical, make sur everything is plugged in and working properly. comp might be low, seems very easy to kick over! i'll keep you posted!
