Noisy axle Big Red '83

Hey guys,

It's been a while that I've posted something, I've been very busy with a lot of things.
In the mean time I've been to a offroad parc in Germany with the ATC's and ATV, was a lot of fun.

Yesterday I took the Big Red out for a ride, but there was a sound by the rear axle, first I thought that
the brakes were making the sound. After some futher inspection the nuts that are on the axle were very hot, is
this normal?

Very possible the rear bearings are going bad. Check for any play in the axle / housing.

Yea, part 39, but make sure you get seals too, part 20, looks like. The way you can tell is by rocking it back and forth and feel the "play" in the bearings. I have an '83 also. :)

It's a fun machine to drive, I didn't drove it for like a month and it started right up

You would need (2) #39, (2) #20. But, what i would do, since it is 30 years old is take it apart and see what might be wore out and replace everything that is. From the parts list there are orings and other dust seals that would probably need replacing also.

I've lifted the big red up yesterday and checked for play (there wasn't any) and tightened the wheels up.
When I got the brake drum off I discovered the problem. The drum isn't round anymore en is almost rusted through.
Besides that the brakes where tightened up to the max, I've adjusted them and now the noise is gone.

The thing is, I need a new drum but they can't supply a drum in The Netherlands.
The price for a drum by cmsnl.com is €176,50!! (around $234)

Is it wise to purchase a second hand on ebay or something?
Is a brake drum interchangeable with other models?
Or is there a US website with parts?

I'm not totally sure about it being able to be swapped with other years, but i bet it is, at least for '82-'84. I would definitely keep an eye on ebay and also ask here in the forum. There are lots of people here who have parts lying around. :p

I think this comment kinda goes along with this thread...... What kind of oil/grease goes in the axle? Since I am in the process of sprucing up/overhaul/restore/improve/etc on my trike I would like to clean that out and refill it with some fresh stuff.

Hey Bud, I'm not sure what trike you are talking about? '83 Red or your 250sx? On my red, which i haven't rebuilt the axle area yet, i would guess some good ole moly lube for the bearings and axle splines.

referring to my 250SX of course, but I would assume that the SX and Big Red use the same type of lube at the ring and pinion area...... or no?

I would assume gear lube is what you need. My'83 Red is just axle and bearings, no ring and pinion. I'm not sure if the later Reds use the same type of lube, but probably so. They shouldn't be much different, if at all.

It would have to have a ring and pinion doesn't it? How else does it engage the shaft??

Honestly, i'm not that familiar with your trike. So, i think best for you to ask someone who has one or has worked on them. I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. Sorry i couldn't help more. Good luck! :)

I actually just found a manual online. Mine uses 80 weight gear oil.

But also I was saying that your Big Red has to have a ring and pinion........ also known as the final drive........

The manual is the best thing you can have, it will help alot!

The '82 & '83 Reds are chain driven, therefore only sprockets, axles, bearings, etc in the rear. They aren't shaft driven with
a ring and pinion.

My mistake, didn't know that!!! I thought all big reds were shafties!!!
