Newbie Needs Help

I am trying to get my 1985 250 ESin good condition once again. Finally have some time. Yesterday, I installed a carb rebuild kit. I am by no means a mechanic, but I try. Anyway, got it all back together and running, but gas is pouring out of the overflow hose. Stupid question, I know, but is there supposed to be an o ring in the float needle chamber, for the float needle to seat on? Please forgive my ignorance.

No. You may have the float too high, or the needle is sticking open, or there's a piece of crud holding it open. Or you got the wrong rebuild kit. Try the old float needle.

Thank you for the reply. My Brother In Law said the same thing you said. He said he has often got the wrong needle in rebuild kits. The float is a plastic float, non adjustable, but I think it was working before I got into it. I need to take it back down anyway, as my choke (Honda calls it a starter valve) is not working correctly anyway. I guess I'll buy the kit for it, as the one that is in it now does not have the "O" ring on it, and the needle has some slop in it and I do not think it is going back down the hole. Once again, thanks for the reply. As I said, I am by no means a "Wrench", but with todays prices, I better become one quick. I'm trying. Thanks.

here is a tutorial on rebuilding these carbs. Try this first, tap the bowl with a screwdriver handle or shake the trike real good. It will help center up the float valve. Not unusual for these carbs.

And no, there is no oring for the float valve seat. The float valve has a rubber tip.

If the float is not adjustable, it may still have sunk. I only mention because not all rebuild kids come with a replacement float. Of course, that's not the root cause of your problem at hand....most likely float needle/seat related. Try the original needle as others have said. After that, make sure the float height is correct before starting in on jetting.

One of three things is happening

The float is no longer buoyant. See if it floats in water. Is yes, then the float is ok
The float valve seat has junk in it. Shoot some carb cleaner in the hole and blow it out real goo.
The float valve is not centered up. Tap the bowl with a screwdriver or shake the trike real good.
