Honda 350X BAJA/Racing build #2
This trike is owned by Oscar Mayer, I am only building it in my shop in Arizona, Mike is building a 350X BAJA/Racing #1 trike in Texas.
That thread can be found here-
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/173340-350X-baja-race-buildup
Special Thanks to- My Wife who I never seen, Mike and his son Austin, Billy Golightly for this great forum, and the wonder forum members that have been interested in our crazy projects.
I am a 2-stroke guy at heart, having raced many 250R's, occasionally a Tri-Z and a few Tecate's. I do know 4-strokes and raced a 200X, but never a 350X and I didn't see very many at the track back in the day, which makes building a full blown 350X a ton of fun!
I have also raced/built TRX250R's, LT250R's and more bikes than I can remember.
This trike will be adjustable for anything from MX, GP's and desert/BAJA with a few tweaks and a different set-up.
The theme will be 2015 technology on a vintage 350X, we could have used a Honda CRF450 and converted it, but NORRA would not let us race it in their events. Plus, I love vintage/nostalgia!
My 1965 Pontiac "GTO" project was removed from my shop and put in storage because of the lack of room. (Which is complete other than body work, a few small details and a windshield)

None of these forks will be used on this trike, it will have something much, much larger and adjustable from 10" to 12" (They can be adjusted for less than 10" as well)
Details to be revealed...later.

This trike can from the San Francisco, CA. area and it has alot of rust, rot and damage from the salt.
It's not much fun taking it apart and I am going though CLR and WD40 by the gallon!
The stock front and rear fender are in nice shape and the seat is ok, my guess is those piece were inside somewhere and the rest of the trike was stored outside, the paint is also really faded in places that would normally be covered.

The shock is rotted by salt, I tried to bleed it and the valve cap was welded on and twisted right off below the stem on the bladder cap, the shock shaft is pitted and rusty, thankfully we are not using 90 percent of the 350X shock, plus I have two spares.

both trikes are being done identical with a few minor exceptions to the actual "race" model over the #2 which will be more for pre-runs and backup of parts as needed.
Milner has been awesome in all his help and assistance and we are having a great time hashing things out each night on ideas and stuff on what to do with each detail. we discuss everything from skid plate thicknesses to custom rear master cylinder mounts. my son gets board listening to us at times LOL poor kid! we have been known to be on the phone for hours! haha good times!
Baja#1 is about to be ready for the final stages of frame work and then assembly. Baja #2 (here) is just slightly behind.

The trikes will have true blue spray painted frames at least until testing is completed, so they can be checked for cracks and altered or added to if needed.
Powder coating or plating may be added later, I prefer spray paint on full blown race trikes/bikes.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/28/83456c9165baa89f12298e786f659b7e.jpg

^ yea i agree. after talking about it, i think your idea of painted is way better as we will always end up having to redo stuff and why coat only to ruin it when we can patch the area after with paint?

Plus when we put the turbo and fuel injection unit on later, we will have to weld in some mounts.

Yes, Pro Taper is sponsoring us so we are using Honda tall CR bend 1 1/8" bars, Honda CR levers, front master cylinder, clutch perch.
http://www.protaper.com/products/handlebars/evo
Honda CR throttle assembly with a Pro Taper Twister throttle tube.
http://www.protaper.com/products/throttle-tubes/twister-tubes
I would love to run the CR kill button, but we must run a headlight at some events, so stock 350X or maybe something more modern, Mike's the engineer and he is in charge of the lights, so it's his problem.
Pro Taper chains too-
http://www.protaper.com/products/chains
And bar mounts-
http://www.protaper.com/products/triple-clamps/bar-mounts/universal-rubber-mounts
HUGE! Thank You to Pro Taper for the sponsorship for these projects, I have been using their products from day one and honestly believe they are the best!

He have a winner!, thanks for playing, great job.
Yes this in the profile of a stock 350X fully bottomed out, with a clearance of 6.5" to 7" that's a ton of ground clearance.
I am not looking for the frame to be dragging in the weeds, but a skid plate is not all that important with that kind of clearance.
So I have engineered a suspension set up to use a couple of those inches down, and the rest up to keep the center of gravity as low as possible.
You would need skateboard wheels to flat track a 350X.
Here the set-up on a modern MX bike-

Mike, Oscar Mayer is a ex-import tuner, racer, turbo, builder of some serious race cars (He still has a WRX), so he had a idea and did the research to make a turbo & fuel injection work on a 350X to make sure we can keep up with 250R's at top speed!
I think I have him talked into a fast, updated, modern type, but very reliable 350X engine with a 80 MPH+ target, but if he gets passed by a 250R it will probably be- Game on!
oscarmayer
06-29-2015, 10:17 AM
^ haha yea well first thing's first. lets see how she runs with 10.5:1 compression and some engine mods to see how she responds and how reliable it will be. if we can make it last for the NORRA, then I will start experimenting with the spare 350x motor we have and see what happens. wonder what it would be like to run a 65hp 350x with the smallest gear in the rear and tallest in the front? 120mph?

Using a PRM Product rear grab bar, this one is used but I am going to polish it up.
BAJA #1 is using a PRM too, but it has the wide desert style grab bar.
I have been using PRM since the mid 80's they are some great products.

Big Nissin brakes-
No 350X or for that matter ATC brake components will be used, except a drilled & surfaced 350X rear rotor, We are not going oversized due to ground clearance.
Dual piston calipers front & rear, no E-brake.
modern 2015 braking standards, custom stainless brake lines, EBC pads, synthetic brake fluid. Stoppies will be possible!

Scott's steering stabilizer, made by Ohlins in Sweden.
IMHO they are simply the best, bulletproof and have a huge range of adjustment.
Unfortunately I have to custom build all the mounts, they do not make anything that will work, I guess they don't want to be in the trike market or maybe no one asked before us?217698217699217700

Gusset time, the stock 350X frame weighs 25 lbs. I will probably add 10lbs, maybe 15. I will weigh it afterwards. Don't worry we are going to take a lot of weight off in other areas. I am hoping we will be close to the stock weight full blown desert/BAJA race ready....Hopefully less!
Here is most of them, I have a few more in the works.
And some other items for gussets and spacers, ETC.

I like them, too. Have three in the family. Always a great pipe. When I got mine it had 12 discs. I repacked it, left the 12 in there, and when I fired up the engine for the first time I was about deaf. Whole lot louder then the IDS2 on my Fourtrax 300 with all the discs in it.

I am thinking a Supertrapp in a 100-1000 miles race will be very hard on the ears, the newer KTM 450's have some pretty nice mufflers with spark arrestors that can be had on EBAY pretty cheap, I have looked into it and they will work, but they have not been finalized.
They will have a bigger header that Mike spec'd out in his tread. It's a big gun.

This trike was pretty dirty and although the Pinalen cleaner I was using was working, I found this ZEP Purple cleaner it even has a picture of a chain on the bottle.
$12 bucks a gallon and it works great! 20oz per one gallon of water, watch your hands or wear gloves it's nasty stuff.
It says not to use it on aluminum, but I tried it and had no problems, but I had to wash off a whitish film on some parts with dish soap.

350X Swingarm Plus 3", Chromoly steel, TIG welded, Banshee skid plate mounts, 3-way adjustable shock mounts, center shock mount removed, 350X brake mount removed, 1986 250R brake pin added, 1986 250R carrier set-up.
The skid Plate will be made out 1/4" plate.
We were going to build our own swing arms, but we factored the time, steel, consumables and the materials for a jig and this is the way to go! We have plenty on our plates with the rest of the builds.

With the way I designed the rear suspension it is 8-way adjustable with the link mount which is offset and can be flip 180 degrees.
I wanted a lot of adjustment because Mike is a bit shorter then me and I wanted to make sure his feet can touch the ground if needed... Sorry, Mike!
The upper & lower stock rubber suspension bushings will not be used, PTFE bearings with machined sleeves and seals with a zerk fitting will be filled with my high temp. synthetic/teflon grease mixture.

The swing arms and skid plates are finished, I am going to polish them up and paint them soon.
They are Honda 350X on the front side, 1986 250R bearing carrier setup, I went with a Banshee chain guide, Banshee skid plate mount and my 8 way adjustable shock mount setup, aircraft oval tubing all chromoly, 1/4" thick skid plates, I am going to machine flanged 3/4" oversized Delrin bushings, full length.
I would like to Thank Metal Tech for building a great swing arm to our custom specs this thing it AWESOME! Sometimes it's rare to get a custom piece the way you designed it and they nailed it!

That's what I thought as well but probably not a lot. I'm curious to see the difference in weight as well however extended off road races are more of an endurance test of man and machine rather than world GP or 1/4 mile stuff. Durability and performance are a priority.
Did you change the angle of the rear shock any?
onformula1
09-06-2015, 04:44 PM
The stock shock can be used and put in the stock position if you want, but with the trick shock we are using it is adjustable and at the highest setting it has close to three times the shock travel over stock so it mounts back further and the shock is layed down more thank stock.
