Hey All!! This is my first post so i hope my question isnt to stupid......I just got a 85 ATC250R in mint shape..It has some work done to the motor and what not,but the last owner put the stock pipe back on..My question is,What pipe would be the best all around? I live on the oregon dunes so i would be riding on the beach most of the time..I was thinking going with a paul turner high rev but for a new one its like 300 bucks..That seems a little extreme for a 20 year old bike..The motor is basically stock other then ported and polished..Any info would be nice!!
THANKS!!

Welcome to the board! What part of Oregon do you live in? I see in your post you have a Tiger 500? I'd like to see that bike. Check out our group ride down in Florence on the 18th thru 20th. Keep in mind at the dunes you have to watch the dB levels also. http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=20538

I've got the FMF Fatty on my 85 with a PowerCore Silencer. Even though my bike is not turned correctly, I like the Fatty so far. I'm going to sell the PowerCore (like new -- let me know if intersted) and get a TurbineCore. The TurbineCore has a spark arrester and is 2 Dbs quieter (according to FMF tech).

I have an FMF gold series with a turbine core. I hate the FMF compared to my last pipe. I have one of those no name black pipes, to bad it is totally wore out. It was 10 times better then the FMF as far as I'm concerned. The FMF has tons of torque on the low end probably good for woods riding, but if I wanted torque I would have bought a 350X.

ESR, all the way. He makes the best pipe for the price, and has good customer service. Also hes local for me so suport the local guy.

I have several different pipes that i am trying out. At the moment, i have a trinity handmade pipe that really puts out the HP. I have a few others that i will try out later on this summer.

I am wondering the same thing on my 86 250R. I have a aftermarket pipe w/silencer but I cannot fing a tag or stamp or anything on it same goes for the silencer, nothing... So I do not know if I have a descent pipe or not. What is a good pipe for a stock bike and a bike with porting work done too it. Cause I plan on porting but not yet. Maybe if I posted a pic of the pipe someone would know?

know what i find is stupid? half the people who were naming off pipes dont even have a 250r, so how would you know? i think your deciding on image and price... (what is presented the best and cost the most)

EXACTLY :beer

I think people look for different performance characteristics for there riding style and terrain. I ride mainly dunes and prefer a top end pipe so I can throw the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro of the trike around in trails easier that way it is spinning all the time. So it is impossible to tell someone what pipe is best. All a person can do is give there description of a pipes perfromance characteristics.

I have an 85 R with an FMF pipe and silencer. It seams to work fine, but I have nothing to compare it to because it was on the trike when I got it. After reading what smokinwrench said maybe I should look into a diff pipe because I ride dunes also. Well I guess that wasn't helpfull. :)

The fastest 85/86 "R" that I ever saw & rode had a Bills pipe. Of course you can not get them anymore. You can contact Mike in Ft.Lauderdale if he doesnt chime in as I am 99% sure that he found one for his bike....

You got it Curtis..... There is NO BEST PIPE FOR A 250R. Just better pipes for different uses. I kind of went pipe crazy on my bike. I went on E-Bay and bought every pipe I found. When I built the bike I bought a DG pipe and silencer just because they are so cheap. It was probably the best all around pipe for trail riding. Now I have the Bill's Pipe on it with an Answer silencer . I like it the best. That pipe makes my bike come alive, but only for hard race type riding. It hits hard. I also have tried a Paul turner Hi-Rev. Not good for trail riding you have to keep the RPM's to high to be in the power band...But it does haul trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro if you are running wide open desert style racing. You cant cruise at mid throttle in 5th gear because it spits so you have to ride in 4th with the RPM's high. I tried a Paul Turner Type 6 and it is my second favorite it is good for all around riding styles. I have a hand built sectioned Coffmans pipe that kicks ass racing around a track. It is a low end pipe so the power band hits sooner but flatttens out at hi RPM's. I also put an FMF on it that I did not care for. I compare it to the DG. As faras silencers go I have 6 different ones for the different pipes, but they do nothing for performance just sound different. The commom misconception that I also thought before I tried different pipes was that a Hi-Rev pipe would make my bike faster and a Low-Rev pipe would make it slower. Not true the difference is when the power band hits and at what RPM you must opperate the bike. Like I said you dont want to trail ride with a HI-Rev because you have to keep the bike Reved High to get any power and that will just burn up your motor. But if you are racing wide open in the desert then you want a Hi-Rev pipe. If you are racing on a track and you are going in between 1st and 3rd gears and on and off the gas then you want a Low-Rev pipe so the power band kicks in immediatly. For normal trail type riding a Mid Range pipe is the best over all. But for my 250R I am staying with my Bill's Pipe mainly because no body else has one. If you can ever find one buy it. before I found mine I actually called Bill and asked for one. I was told "Those jigs have been put away long ago" I called 3 times to try and have one made. I was told no. So see there is no BEST PIPE for a 250R, but there is a BEST PIPE for your riding styles....MIKE

The only 2 pipes I have tried were the DG pipe and FMF Fatty pipe. I have a different opinion of the DG vs FMF pipes than Mike. I think the DG is the dog of all pipes (it's crap) I took it off the same week I bought it, I sold the DG to my Bro when he got his R, he only had a stock pipe on his. He said he could tell little difference between stock and the DG. We drag raced several times and I blew him away by atleast 3 trike lengths. He got tired of loosing so he thought he would spring for the FMF. I thought it mite make a little difference, well, let me tell you, after he in stalled the FMF he was out running me by atleast a trike length. So I would say buy anything but the DG, it's junk.

I called around a few weeks ago to see who all is still even making the 250r pipes, and for whoever is interested, you can still get pipes from DG, and FMF obviously, but also trinity still makes small runs of pipes, as does ct racing. These two pipes are both hand formed cone type pipes. The Paul turner is still available, and some say that the ESR is as well, although on their website they say out of stock till further notice. LRD not too long ago stopped production, and they won't even do one as a custom job. I had a Bill's top end pipe on my old R, and I must say I wasn't as impressed with it as everyone else seems to be. Maybe my bike wasn't built up enough to use it, I didn't have any porting work, just the cr headgasket, and rad valve as I recall. It seemed to have less low end than the stocker, and hardly any midrange either. Now on topend it would pull hard, and had tons of overrev but I think even a top end type pipe should have some pretty good midrange hit. I know killborg has a bill's pipe on his R, maybe he'll chime in too. I think I may try a paul turner hi rev pipe. I love riding woods, but I have a 350x for that, and for the woods I ride, the 250r's rear axle is too wide anyway in stock form even for most places. Those of you that have had Pal turner hi rev pipes, are they all topend, or do they have a good midrange hit as well? They are advertised as having such, and as being a "all around pipe".

Hey guys, Ive been looking around for 85R pipes the last few days, and i was really shocked on how many people actually had them still..there is a bike shop just down the street from where i live in OR..The place is called White Knuckle Racing http://www.whiteknuckleracing.com/frame.htm I haven't actually talked to them but it looks like the type2 highrev and fatboy tip will run around 290 but don't quote me on that..Im still looking around for cheaper prices myself..Anyway id thought id pass that along im going to drive down there and see what they got..Well thats it hope that was helpful to a few of you out there :beer
