if it was rings it would be oil smoke meaning blue smoke wouldnt it i think you're probly running too rich a fuel mixture. smokinp a 225dx is a fourstoke.

smokinp a 225dx is a fourstoke. I know...what does this have to do with it?I am not talking about the oil to gas mix ratio I am talking about the oil that he runs in it.the oil might be to thick causing smoke.

hmm, smoke looks white, so thats why I didnt think it was a piston, could it be something with the valves?

i'd like to hear an explination on why that would cause white smoke.

jmsmiling. More info please. Smoking when cold and not hot, smoking only a startup, smoking all the time...??? Is it using oil?
White smoke will be oil burning. Sometimes oil buring will have a blue tint to it but make no mistake about it. It is oil. If it were running rich as someone mentioned it would be "Black" smoke, not white for sure.
Give us more info and we can diagnose the problem a lot better.
Curtis.

well I havent done any work on it or looked into it. Its a trike for sale cheap, but it runs and is smoking and Im considering it if the price is right. But Im not to keen on changing the piston as I have several other projects going on.

i'd like to hear an explination on why that would cause white smoke. Running oil that is not suppose to be used in a trike(or any machine)will cause it to smoke more then its suppose, like running oil that is too thick is too much oil and this makes burn off(smoke).my friend used oil that was too thick by mistake and his trike smoked really bad.

valves or anything withoil burnin with the gas is usually blue smoke, unless you overfilled it with oil, than it comes out white, other than that im not sure why it would be white

hopefully its just water, I did just pressure wash it at the car wash...
mine does it, only started doing it now that the outside temp is about plus 3 to 4 degress Cel...does it every year...
Forgot to say, i'm going with the water in the exhaust thing here, hot engine when it's shut off, the cooling down effect causes condensation (again being the time of year), then the next time the engine starts, it heats up the water. make perfect sense to me. mine will start doing this about 2 to 3 minutes after started. And it doesn't smell like burning oil or anything engine wise to me.

I have a 1985 1/2 225 DRS Tri Moto. Lat year mine started to do the same smoke signals. It had great compression. So I know rings and piston were ok. I checked the valve and clearence those to were fine. I took everything apart to inspect the valve guides and seals. To my surprize they were trashed ! After a complete valve job my baby runs like a champ again !!
Not sure if that is what you have or not but this helped me out ?? I am a 2 stroke man myself. But love my Tri Motos !!
Hope this helped some what ??

as it turns out it looks like its just running too rich, as I made adjustments to the carb the smoke and smell went away, plus it runs soo good it cant be rings. Also, the air/mixture screw was all the way in...

not true , i've seen lots of engines smoke like crazy and run and drive great from worn rings . if its running rich it'll have a grayish or black tint to it. unless its just dumping a crazy amount of fuel in then it'll be white but the gas smell would be horrible in that case.
