I took my recently-acquired '86 250R for my first ride today at St. Joe Park.
Simply amazing.
After all the hype about them being high-strung "race" trikes, I had my doubts.
I'm here to tell you the 250R is fantastic.
They're LIGHT, have TONS of easily-controlled power, amazingly nimble on the trails and just plain fast-as-stink! :w00t:
I love it.
No offense to all the 350X folks out there but....
I still love my 350X but it pales in comparison to the R.
I've cut my teeth on the 350X and the move to an R was a natural progression.
Now I know why 250R's are so popular.
I'm a believer.

You know everyonce in a while I see one of those stickers or shirts that say "Real engines have valves" and I think to myself "Yeah, Real engines have REED valves" :D
The 250R's are very nice. Definetly one of the best.

Yep, they're a lot of fun for sure. I sold my first one about 3 years ago. It was kinda rough, I picked up a really nice one, too bad it's blown up at the moment. lol. What kind of pipe do you have on it? Mine had a DG full system on it when I got it. I replaced the pipe with a chrome ESR, that pipe is AWESOME! Looks tons better than black too. I found a killer deal on a power valve motor and it looks like that is going in my bike. Should be interesting. I'll have to do a little sand dragging down at St. Joe with it. Do they ever race for money out there?

My R has the stock pipe but an FMF silencer, K&N filter and the air box is still installed. That is it!
Right before we left St. Joe, we set up a wall of bikes (450R's, Raptors, Z400's, Tecate, 350X's, etc.) and made a few good races.
First race: everyone got a major jump on me.
Second race: the only bike near me at the end of the pass was some bad *** black quad (450R, I thought).
My R pulled like a freight train! :w00t:
And I'm a NEWBIE!
Once I nail the launch and shift points, I have no doubts it'll be a force to be reckoned with.
Third race: Trike Dude pointed at my front tire....FLAT!! DANG IT! And just when I felt confident I could whoop up on that 450R. :D
Thus ending my day. :(
As the Terminator says, "I'LL BE BACK!". :beer

That it started on the third kick on Sunday morning at St. Joe?
Low-mid 40 degree range, cold and damp, too!
So much for the "2 strokes are cold-natured" rumor. ;)
Sorry, had to add that. :)

Sweet, I love to see trikes beating quads. Most of the quad guys I ride with have no idea how fast an ATC250R is. My buddy even though he was gonna beat mine with his 400EX. If you have the extra cash I'd reccomend that ESR pipe. You should be able to get it for around $200, list is $240 though. If not I may let my old DG go, it's decent shape. I wanted to hang onto it incase I buy another one with a stock pipe. You can take a look at it if you make it out this way. Hell, just swap it on real quick and see what you think. I'm not really impressed with it but it may add some power over stock, not sure.

Yeah Mo350X isn't it funny how your bike started right up and how the Tecate started up and idled for 20 minutes but we had to work on the 350X for 30 mins to get it started.
I knew you would fall in love w/ that R!
Let's ride soon

If the 250R with only those mods is beating a (modded?) 450R, the dude driving the 450r cant drive worth a crap.

I completly agree with that. That 450 should SMOKE everything elce defently if its modded.

You can tell folks know the R's heritage and it's potential.
Besides....how many 2 stroke trikes were there on Sunday?
Two: Me and Trike Dude's Tecate.
There were several 2 stroke quads (250R's and Banshees...and some mini's).
I hear you folks on the 450R "should have smoked the 250R...".
It all depends on rider skill.
I have NO rider skill on an R (complete newbie) so that means that 450R I raced must have REALLY been a bad rider! :D
It's a shame to see someone who has poured thousands upon thousands of dollars into a new quad only to merely "keep up with" an old, fossil of a trike! :D
I bet I have less than 1/4 in my 250R that he had in that 450R. he he he
Thanks for all the kind words, folks.
It feels like I've joined a brotherhood, the brotherhood of ATC250R owners! :beer

Thats pretty funny about the 450R rider Bill! I know I kept up w/ it on the first race for sure on the old Tecate. I need to adjust the clutch on that Tecate. After that is done I expect to see you behind me most of the time. ;) hehehehehe

I can't wait to knuckle down and detail the R.
It looks great right now but will be SHARP once it's all detailed. :w00t:

That's no joke, I need to get a 350X. That's an awesome pair. I just saw over on .org you can put a 81/82 XR500 top end on a 350X?? I have 3 of those bikes so now I really need to find one.
You need to persuade your brother to buy exhaust for his 450R so you can have his endcap! :D

My brother loves his HRC kit on his 450R.
I constructed my own "HRC end cap".
I attached a close-up.
It sounds AWESOME on the 350X. DEEEEP!
The stock 450R outlet is something like 15/16", this one is 2".
The HRC is actually a little larger than that but I only had 2" tubing laying around and it came out nice.
I put a little make-shift "spark arrestor" in it, too.
Just in case the Ranger at St. Joe would ever check me. ;)
I installed the end cap, took off the air box lid, bumped the main up to a 142 and adjusted the pilot screw.
Let's just say that she moves along well. ;)

Gotta love having one of each. The more you ride your R the more you'll like it. Funny how the mid-range will pull your gut's out...............................:naughty:

Man, I heard that.
Personally? I think that is what surprised me most; the ability to truck around on the low to mid in the woods and when the need arose?
I could buzz it up to mid-high and WHAM! I was history. :naughty:
Liken it to "flipping a switch". :D
Love your pair, TROLL.
