I want to replace the rear shock on my 250R. I will probably stay with a original Honda shock but my question is will the shock off of a 87-89 TRX fit my '85 250R. I would have to guess that Honda must have changed something on a 1989 shock to make it better than a 1985 shock. I just want to know about shock length and mounting. Please dont fill me with useless "I guess" or "I Think" replys Who really knows.........

Mike, just have your stocker rebuilt, The guy that does mine charges about $65 for everything except new powdercoating. I have an 88 shock laying here I can compare to an 85 and get back to you with all the measurements if you want to go that way.
The only differences I see so far are the hose for the canister is twice as long on the 88 and the bottom bolt hole is larger on the 88 by 1/16th inch. Also, the 85 shock is 1/4 inch longer than the 88 from eye to eye.

I just picked up a new TRX shock, 86-87, and I put it next to a 350x shock. It is identical but I think the TRX has a stiffer spring. The springs are slightly different, the internal valving might be different, but they look the same. I would imagine that if the TRX shock fits the 350X, it should fit the ATC as well. I'd rather find an ATC shock if possible though.

Well X I would have it rebuilt but The knob on the rebound canister is screwed up so I tried to Jig Rig it and stripped it then lost the ball bearings and so on and so on. I just figured I could buy another one easier than trying to fix this one. And the price of the aftermarket ones are crazy. And the 200r has some work of somekind done to it. So I just want a good stock shock. And I thought maybe a TRX shock would be the right move. Maybe not though.

Mike,
The top shock mount is narrower on the trx shocks. Spacers can be used.
The bottom bolt hole is larger because of the larger diameter bolt used on 88/89 trxs.
The res hose is longer but is usable if you don't mind it rubbing on the frame.

Are there any guys here that rebuild stockers by chance?I have the same issues, the adjuster knob for the rese is stripped out, bearing is gone and the shock needs the oil changed and a recharge.

I just had mine done by Works. I had them do their "heart transplant" on it years ago and it really made a big difference. This time when I sent it in, it was too worn out(only 22 years old, go figure) so they put a new cartridge in. That's basically everything but the cannister getting replaced. You get their ball-valve valving and a larger 5/8" shaft. With their valving the adjuster on the reservoir is no longer used so it wouldn't matter if your knob is screwed up. You won't miss the adjuster because their system is so much better anyway.

I have heard Work does that-I think I'll send it over to them, thanks for the reply! It has to be cheaper than a new 1 for sure!!!
