View Full Version : Is The 350x Actually Becoming More Rare The The Average Joe

  Is the 350X actually becoming more rare for the average joe to ever afford?? By all of these prices on Ebay for all these clean ones etc, is it making it alot harder for the average guy to get one.
By the high prices, and mostly high dollar collector buying all of them also making the more rare? If all these collectors are buying them and keeping large amounts of them and doing full restores etc, they are actually becoming more rare. Why you are asking, well how often do you ever see a collector sell his stuff? Especially to the gereral public. Most sales usually take place inbetween friends or affiliates. So this big ruch of high prices will die off soon, but after they all go, wonder how long it is gonna be until many if any come up again?? Good thing Cvillarria is in the process of moving back home or we would really be seeing some silly stuff.
These are just some silly thoughts I got, just wondered how everybody else take this.

I have noticed the jump in prices, makes me glad I got mine when I did because I bought it off of E-Bay in a way (kinda). I have been offered or 500 more than I paid for mine here recently. It dont look as good as it did when i bought it either lol.. Just getting harder and harder to find. The people that grew up riding them are hitting a stage in life that they tells them they need to get another one? that might have something to do with it.. Who knows..

Yah I beleive the prices are going up, when I first starting looking for a trike before my Z I saw a few 350's for about 1500 CAN. Now there are about 2000+ easy. The way I see it, is yes prices will go up and up. But theres always going to be that nice trike you have always wanted sitting in a shed somewhere. I know I have personally got my dad to stop the car and me rush over to under the tarp cause I saw a tire. There will always be more 350s, just more higher prices. Stock up while you can! and I see you have already

Everything is cyclical....350x's are sweet but they are all over..Markets saturated .....5-7 on ebay at any given time....How often do you see mint Tecates, 86 Tri Z's, or Tigers, A serious collectors needs a 350x in the collection or to the daily rider they are great to have fun on but to the collector I think the other bikes I mentioned are a must....If you want a value to ride the tri Z still takes the cake...mint ones RARELY top 1500.00

I true collector is ???? What is a true collector. I would be much more worried about the guys who grew up normal lifes and the made alot of money. You don't see alot of those tecates etc because not alot of people wanted them or had them. They are sweet and all but most of all people who where riding when available had hondas. they grow up make a couple million a years and buys 24 trikes in one year alone they are gonna get rare. You think somebody making a couple million a year is gonna take his time to list them or sell them ever, NA DOUBT IT. They will stay with the family. If you rode Hondas back in the day which mostly everybody did, then you are gonna want a Honda. You say there is a Tecate on Ebay most people would say..... Didn't know you liked street bikes. You say there is a sweet three wheeler on ebay, most people would only know of the 350x and 250r. Most popular and sought after. Tecate, tigers etc are for very few people. Not down talking them by anymeans, but most people wouldn't even know what they are or persue looking for one. Just my opinion, I have a ton of tikes and am on ebay alot and never looked for either of them. OrangeCounty you know exactly who and what I am talking about above, so I am sure you can relate.d

OC obviously sees the same thing....
I think you have it twisted. Here are the latest completed listings that were on E-Bay. The more items for sale usually means the prices are cheaper. The one I bought last summer was not as clean as half of these it was $1900. It looks to me like a nice X can be still be bought for $1500.00. Which is $500 less than 7 months ago.:wondering Now RR's $6000 and MM's $5400 is out of the ordinary, and high, and as for the $4500 R thats currently running.  Parts are a different story. IMO
86 350x $1,825
85 350x $2,250
85 350x $3,350 original clean Ca.
85 350x $2,400 clean

I just bought 1 last night all honda except the rear tires, and all there. In great condition it was a 2 owner bike . The man that used to own the HONDA dealer here got it for his son when he turned 18. Well when said son turned 18 he joined the NAVY. Since 1990 it has been in his carpot under a black tarp. I bought it last night fron the dad (the old honda dealer) for $750.00. He also has a 1985-1987 BIG REDS, 1983-1987 ATC250R'S, AND THE 1983-1987 HONDA ATC 200X'S. tHEY ARE STILL IN THE CRATES IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED STORAGE AT HIS HOME. He has a few ofthe tri-z's and stuff he knew was going to eventually become rare. I need fork boots, and decals for the tank, and a seat cover. Then for boots became I guess,.. dry-rotted along with the seat cover. As soon as i took it to the pressure washer to clean the dirt and black dust off of it , i blew the tank decals off somehow, and the fork boots cracked and so did the seat cover.... I will post pictures of her soon...She ain't mint..... but she is all there...and it wouldn't take much to make her mint ... fork boots and seat cover... and wing decals for the tank....

No I do not have it twisted, by peole like Cvillarria buy them all up, ya the pricing of them may have went down in fact now due to the volume of them on Ebay. But when the prices did go up realy high it brough everybody out of the wood work with them. So how do you know he is not buying them all and just getting discounted prices?? You're not gonna tell me that he could only have one screen name and nobody else ever finding or just calling him and selling to him directly. Again, yea wow they are cheaper than before still bringing good money though, but by bringing htem all out and collectors ets buy bunches of them that are not gonna be selling them atleast not for a long time, it takes alot of the clean x's out of the buyer market. Why is everybody making such a big fuss about all the clean ones on ebay if the are so cheap and commonly found???

Collectors??? WTF In last year you have seen how many mint non-ridden dust collectors??? 2 or 3. Most of the one's selling are not museum quality. Most are riders or restos. If your boy is still buying them, his name or not he ain't paying what he was! How many average ATV riders are buy these things as collectables? They ain't mathbox cars.  Maybe you should hit Sotheby's up and ask him many ATC's they sold last year. Barret Jackson???

Hmmmm Rangerover ..I agree to disagree
Yes Honda is the ATC god and sold high volumes of three wheelers...A true collector has a wide range of interest...you can have true collector that collects just hondas for sure....What i am saying is that because they sold such high volumes one cant be worried about finding a nice one.....sooner or later one will come up whether its on ebay, in the barn down the road, or sitting in someones front yard. cvilliria cant and wont buy them all ....sorry he may have many but he will never have thousands of them
I think on the other hand people have given up on the Tigers and Tecates in the sense that they are very difficult and very expensive to restore...low volume production etc. I challenge you to buy one and try to restore one..not like ordering from honda by a long shot!!!! Fewer numbers mean you can command a much higher price...I am not selling but I believe what I can get for my Tecate and Tiger would blow past any of those 350x prices (call me grandiose)...even some of the high prices you have gotten for 350x's....One or two tigers pop up on ebay a year if you are lucky.. I have never seen a second generation tectate that was COMPLETE 100% original all factory parts. Its very hard to find those tool boxes, rear silencers, chain guards not bashed up, owner manual holder etc etc etc.
Your title to the thread was "is the 350x becoming more rare than the average Joe"..I see more 350x 's than Joes I known my entire life: lol:  To me RARE means something that is more collectible than the everyday 350x....and I love them
Just my opinion but who am I

All I am saying is that the people that had them and kept them as investments and are now all selling them are ones more than one person knew about obviously. If they all goto one two or three people who are not gonna sell them that leaves the ones to be found in barns etc. Heck ya they are still out there, but just makes it alot harder to find, in my oppinion Mr. Jackson LOL. I do not think cvillaria will buy thousands by any means can he, I would definaely have to say yes, but thats just me talking here.

Which tecates are rare.... I just sold a complete 1985 model lime green kxt250 tecate 3-wheeler . right down to the original owners manual, It had a Paul Turner Power Pipe, Westcoat Powdercoated Swingarm, and a 4" extended axle. Plus I had all of the original parts that came off the bike. It had all of the original wheels and tires from Kawasaki, plus a set of douglas wheels with pro wedges mounted on them, she was a sand monster. I bought it in 1987 after highschool. The weights slung out of the flywheel (which I hear is a common problem on the TECATES) so I sheaded her up, until about 2 months ago. She cost me $1000.00 when I bout her from my buddy back in 1987 .... I sold her for $1500.00 and bout a 250r from my Old Honda Dealer Buddy .......What was it actually worth... ? I figured around $1500.00 ...... ? .... the bike still had the big number plate over the radiator...I love Lme Green !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!
Don't see many mint 225 with Sky Blue plastic popping up on ebay to often.I agree with Orangecounty250R.

Which tecates are rare.... !!!!!!
The second Generation 86/87 Tecates and ones that were built like this are rare...All new factory plastics including the Looong discontinued golden right shroud and headlight bezel..Plus way to much to list. You dont see them on ebay let alone like this....lots of time and effort went into this.....building an 87 T3 even better than this :D
Yours sounds like it it was nice and with the factory parts I would have bought it for sure

Hey this is kind of fun to watch keep it going, gives me something to read while i have my lunch. Orangecounty is right , a true collection no matter what it is , is always more interesting with the not so common items, yes the 350xs and 250rs are absolutley mint and should be in anybodys collection but they are everywhere . I always like the real oddball rare stuff like blue ATC70s , mint suzuki ALT125s, tigers , stuff like this yea most people wont pay alot for these bikes but thats where I think the collection should go . hell i would not even mind restoring one of those Manco 3 wheelers they made for a couple of years , its the challenge of pulling it off that makes it fun . Whats even more funny is alot of the guys stating facts on these bikes were probably 3 years old when they came out so really how could they remenber seeing them at the dealer or riding a new 81 250r etc . I see and have seen 3 wheelers being a big collectors market and enjoy being part of it . OK guys back to the debate ,

Whose are the guys that were to young to remember. Me I am 23, I think I have alot of my knowledge in line. Vintage, how come you never return my phone messages I leave for you to restore my two trikes?? I think the fact that I said you will not be seeing anymore real clean 350x's like this for a long time is very true. Stand by your statements, time will tell as always!! There will always be a few out there that is for sure, and the ones that are really clean will probably stay that way, and the ones that are ok will get retored. It is just who is holding them and when and if they will sell and for what dollar amount... Plastics are becoming very rare for the 350x 86, so restoring one of those is getting really hard. LOL the guy who bought my really clean one for 6100 dollars with the brand new plastics speedo and kit etc, he bought it for a rider, so there went another set of NOS plastics.

im sure we would all love to see the 1987 Honda ATC 250R
anyway about the 350x's yes people are paying outlandish prices for them but it must be a back east thing because out here they are everywhere and some are rougher then others and some are nicer then others so i guess i dont see the problem with the avg. joe being able to buy them considering the highest price ive seen for a ver very mint one is about $2100 out here in AZ.

I wasnt pointing fingers , but now that you say your 23 makes you 4 in 87 , so guys like you are collecting and selling for a different reason i think than us older guys who rode these bikes back in the day . I think its more sentimental for us because that was part of out life , I tried calling you back twice now when you called but no answer . OK good sir I will do such. I was born in 82 actaully, and my father who was a doctor hated trike quads etc. Never was allow to have them. But when I was 7- 10 maybe in there I got to spend a month or so at my cousins house in Summerset PA. Then I got to ride and loved it. Kind of a past child hood type thing that I really enjoyed. I think I lucked up on my 350X, it had less than 40hrs on it and never got to it's first oil change...when I drained the old oil out it wasn't that bad either...you could tell the oil bolt had never been removed. It's weird how on most 350X's you see for sell, unless they are "mint", the toolbox, grab bar, case saver, and brake line guide are almost always missing...where do they go?? lol

i scored my current X for only $1200 of ebay.fully restored. i did make about $2000 parting out my old one on ebay though.anything classic in demand will always draw a high dollar and will continue to rise.look at muscle cars for a perfect example. and on that note, the first $2000 takes my X.

Before we can talk about how rare some of these machines are, I would like to ask everyone this question. I have wondered this time after time. Does anyone out there have any information on production numbers for trikes. Like how many 1985 350X's were made and imported into the states. Same with every make, model and year. This would be great info, then we could get an idea of how many 350x's / 250Rs / Tecates / Tri-Z's are really maybe still out there. I personally think there are way more than anybody on these boards think.
Example - the year is 1985, an "average Joe" who is 30 years old drives down to the local Bike Shop and buys a new 350X. He rides it a few years, then parks it when he starts his family, or buys a quad, or has a back operation. It sits in his garage or shed or barn from 1990 till present. Now, "average Joe" in his mid-50's, is really not a huge trike fan, he just bought it to ride it 22 years ago. he's never done any research or searches on the net for three wheelers, so he has no idea that there are sites like this one, and he's never done parts searches on ebay for his trike.
I'll just bet, there are hundreds, maybe thousands. Keep in mind how many people live in this country.
Just my Opinion and thoughts floating through my vindictive head!!!!!

I just bought mine off of eBay for $500 bucks. All it needs is a new axle and paintjob. Everything else is there to make it run. I have a $1400 budget and I am easily going to be able to make it shine. You can't go for a "brand new" looking 350X.. they cost way too much. You need to look for a beat up one with everything there, and buy it. I could make mine look "brand new" too if I had a $2000 budget.. which is much less than the $6000 you'll pay on ebay.

The 87 is in pieces right now but yes it came with the factory headlight bracket that accepts the key switch...It came with the switch but was missing the key:wondering Another board member here gave me the info where I could find a new one (thanks Hornet) I found one at the good ol kawi dealer which is rare to find new kxt parts...The 87 T3 has the key, different decals, parking brake, rolled edges on the wheels and they are powdered silver...not the brushed aluminum like the 86's 87 tecate is very rare kinda of like the 87 X vs the 86 X's in honda world..not to many made it out before they started chopping them

So being very conservative, we could safely say that 10% of the 85 250R's are still ridable, operable, and in service. This being said, probably about (sheer estimate) 10% of the board members have one 85 250R. That is only 600. So with these estimated numbers being thrown out there, there should be roughly 2000 decent R's out there that nobody on here has accounted for. And that is only one model year. I'm sure the 350X's had production numbers similiar. If we could get the production numbers from 85 and 86, we could put this into perspective. I am still going with there are tons and tons of undiscovered trikes stored away out there across America that are begging for us to buy, restore, ride.
Has anyone found any 350X production numbers???????

Agreed! I think we have seen just the tip of the iceberg:lol: We all know that the barnyard finds are out there. One of our dealers here still has his 86 200x unsold,(hangin in the showroom) so you know there are some other unridden ATC's out there. Maybe even some Tecate's.........

You make no sense
It is a question in the title not a statement
Thread: Is The 350x Actually Becoming More Rare The The Average Joe
Ok so i dont get it are you saying that the average joe isnt going to be able to afford a 350X or are they not going to be able to afford the prestine, very very clean ones?
[QUOTE=atctim] Example - the year is 1985, an "average Joe" who is 30 years old drives down to the local Bike Shop and buys a new 350X. /QUOTE]
thats the same story that happend to my dad he bought 2-350x's new in 1985 and sold them in 1989-1990 because one the family was starting, two ridding places were harder and harder to come by, and three all our ridding buddies were moving away. but 21years later im slowly getting him back into ridding i jsut finshed my 1986 250R and stating on his 1985 350X.

Breastman... yes and out west I was told you trip over over 350x's walking down the street (a little exageration)...Weve had the east coast west coast debate before and yes i have found some great wheelers out here but fewer and farther between than OR, CA, AZ.
yeah its true they are all around its just what do you want to pay for them. everyone wants a somking deal but how offten do they really come about. more and more people now know what they are worth and what people will pay.

There you have that..... PetesATC... does that 85-87 350X parts manual have any info on the 86 end production numbers????
What get's me is you see the "average Joe" local dudes around here shelling out $7000 to $8000 for a new "Golf Cart", so how can you ponder that there will come a day where we can't afford a 350X? Even at these newly "inflated" prices, they are not even close to a new ATV in a showroom!
Granted, my Showgirl with the next to last set of OEM rear plastics will NOT be sold..... however, it's not going to be in a museum either. Now on the contrary, I have nearly a complete 350X with about 80% NOS parts yet to assemble. Now THAT will most likely never be rode out of a lawn!
Also... have you seen the "US90" market on ebay? How many nice/complete US90's have you seen go for under $600-700 lately? Heck, just one the other day in Mass was probably sold for only $400 and it had the fender guards stil attached, a rear six-pack rack (one of the first Hondaline ATC assessories!) and a chrome HL guard! Yet some other auctions you see just one tire going for 300-400! Given the US90 is 16 years OLDER than a 350X, the production number's I'd think would be less too and you still see very affordable ones in nice shape come across the auction block. Heck, mine I got even up in a trade for a probably a 3-4 out of 10 scale 225DX!
As far as parts availability, yeah... it's getting tough, but that's part of the challenge and draw of this addicting hobby! Who'd a thought I'd beable to find a NOS Blue US90 HL shell? Heck... they were a optional item on the K0 US90! I got it on ebay for $25. A NOS tailight was on ebay and I got out sniped at $63. I got a second chance offer and held out.... cause I saw a US90 tailight mislabelled still attached to a decent grabbar... picked it up yesterday for $9! The stuffs out there.. however, you can't expect to have it fall in your lap without paying some $$$. Deals are there, you just got to know where and how to look... granted, I see your point, am I going to resell it? Nope. However, we don't live forever and it's got to change hands sometime.

I think the "average Joe" can still buy them. You may just need to look some where else than ebay. I got 2 of them for $600 not to long ago. One is complete except for the grab bar. It is also in good shape. The other just needs a top end. I think that it may be a fad right now. With all the motor cycle & atv shows on. I also think it has not hit it's peek yet. After trike fest gets mentioned in a mag they may go up for a while. That is when I'm going to sale some of mine & then just go buy another one cheaper. Hell I know where 2 nice 250rs are sitting right now for $250 & $350. I plan on picking them up soon if some one does not find them first. So all & all I say most can still afford them. If people can get a new quad then they can afford a nice trike too. I also agree that collectors have more intrest than in the 350x & 250r. Some times I wonder if the people buying them are thinking they can let it sit for a couple of years & double their money & who knows mabey that is the way it will work out but I dought it. The thing that cracks me up the most is people listing parts as NOS are rare that you can still buy & some idiot will just take the saler word for it & not check to see if they can still get it for a dealer. I have seen alot of people calling their parts rare or NOS when they are not. Just people trying to lie to people & get some extra $ out of them.

I'm just happy to see some of the nice bikes be worth more alive than dead. I hate to see people buy up bikes to strip them apart and sell them to make a buck. The only way to stop that is if people see move value in the bike as a whole. The only bike that I have that is OEM is my 250SX.
My racer, although nice (in my opinion) is still worth more apart than alive. Even with all the HRC goodies on it. I could never bring myself to part it out.
However, I'm now happy that I built my bike 7 years ago (now getting an overhaul).

What was missleading about his auction? These speedo were sold about the same time trikes were sold. They just changed the "Honda ATC" off it since the quads were coming out and that way they would work with both the ATC's and ATV's. If you look at the age of those, they are NOS old school ATC speedos. They just dont say ATC on them. If you dont like them, take them to a clock place with the pic of the ATC one. They can print out the face and install it for you. Hehehe then you have a sexy one and no one but you have to know.

Check it man, most of us ohio guys ride EVERY weekend. You got something to ride? You got time to ride it? If its a yes yes then get a hold of us. We will probably ride in Bucyrus, Oh. this sunday. If the weather isnt too bad come kick it.
Semi new to the Ohio area. I live in Avon Ohio 44011, are you guys gonna be riding up here any time soon???? Where kind of conditions do you guys ride in and how aggressive of riding. Are you guys on trikes or quads.

We may be up that way sometime soon when we go to ride at Max's. He lives in Cuyahoga (sp) Falls up there kinda near you. We ride pretty aggressive trails and hills. Everyone is on a trike but me. How close to cleveland is avon?
