I`ve just got hold of a 85 tri-z and just got it running which is fine til i try and move it, if i stick it in gear i`ve got to give it almost full revs and work the clutch to try and pull away otherwise it dies.

it was gradually gettin there (starting to pull a bit better and pick up speed) and then i switched it off tried to restart it and it backfired then ran crap so i changed the plug it was fine for about a minute then same again only there was oil round the plug around the head mind you i only hand tightened the plug and came back out about 2mm but why the oil?

does it need rings? is the carb needing cleaned? or is it something more sinister?

First off welcome to the boards :beer

Most of the time, its a good idea to clean the carb. Dosent sound like thats your problem though....

The oil on the plug could just mean your running way to rich, and you need to rejet. You dont neccessarily need new rings. You can do a compression check to see where your at though. Good compression for the Z is between 150 and 200

Are you sure your starting out in 1st gear? gears are 1 down, 4 up.

You should pick yourself up a manual if you dont already have one. You can download one to your computer from this link:

Once again welcome, and good luck. You should post up some pics of your ride!

definately starting out in 1st gear when it was starting to run slightly better it was gradually picking up speed but no where near what z should be as i was having to ping the clutch and i should have been thrown off it but the back end was starting to kick out then.... ....nothing?

My first thought was that you need to adjust your clutch. That dosent explain why it would die on you though...........

So the bike ingages fine? You just cant get it to go without ragging the clutch? Does it feel like its slipping?

if it wasnt dying then i would think it would be the clutch but the clutch wasnt even adjusted properly, the cable was loose then i fixed it so thats the clutch ruled out.

its not the pick of the litter but its z none the less, oh yea it was seized when i got it but a wee rock back & forth & new oil soon sorted it.

is it boggind down and trying to die when you let off the clutch? what premix are you running and what ratio.?

thats exactly what its doing, after reading the owners manual i think that it may be a carb problem although why would it run ok then try n die when in gear?
havnt changed the fuel yet just wanted to ge it goin 1st.

1. Drain the Old Gas by removing the Gas Tank

2. Add Fresh Fuel , Mix at 32:1 with 2 Stroke Synthetic oil :w00t:

3. Clean the Carb or ReBuilt kit if possible

4. Change the Clutch Fluid

5. Clean your Air Filter or Just Buy a New one

6. Buy Few Spark Plug's

7. While your Cleaning the Carb Check to see if the REED'S are Damage or Week
To be honest if they havn't Been Changed Just Buy New one's . :D

You'll be in way better shape after you take care of these Step's :beer

yea your probably running it way to rich so when you put stress on the engine it cant keep high revs and bogs down, does it smoke alot? Hey a quick video of you doing it and showing us what it does would help. Also clean your carb and clean your airfilter.

i`ll try and get a video of it if i can get it to start, are they always a pain to start?

i`ve been having to put a small drop of fuel straight into the carb via the intake just to start it then its fine til i switch it off.

Mine starts really easy. I usually kick it slow for 2-3 times (just to roll everything over) then stab it and it lights right off.

it sounds like your pilot jet is clogged, so a carb clean is in order.

sounds like a fuel delivery problem, enought to get it going and then quicly drying up so then it would die, possible problem with fuel pump? but i would go with Ceaser on everything first then check fuel pump or it could be just that.

First kick most times mine starts,

You say that it was siezed, Have you checked the compression? My bet is that its real low

not checked the compression yet, i`ll change the fuel and strip the carb.

what ratio of fuel/2stroke is best?

also what is the correct plug? i read somewhere that its B8ES and somewhere else said BR8ES

I run Klotz supertechniplate oil at 50:1 in my Z.

Checking the compression after freeing a siezed motor is a must..

Can you turn the motor over with your hand pushing the kicker? I can barely do it my hand when it gets to the compression point. Have to jump on the kicker.

ssskipeee

i can turn the kicker by hand fairly easy, it has compression but not sure if its enough thats why i thought originally that it could be rings.

hey, new to you 2 cycle. before you spend a lot of time, there are things that need to be checked. was the engine seized, or hydro-locked? a crankcase full of fuel will lock a 2 cycle. exhaust could be full of unburned fuel, carbon etc. I'd pull the exhaust off and check it out. If it's plugged even partially, it won't run right, so it needs to be cleaned out.

ssskipeee
01-26-2007, 02:08 PM
like i said the z is in pretty bad condition so the exhaust is a bit of a mess too and blows from around the head. but it does run until its in gear and just dies this is why i was originally thinking rings

4cylinders
01-26-2007, 03:24 PM
hey, if it starts, it's not rings. If it's blowing exhaust out at the head, it's probably plugged exhaust.

ssskipeee
01-26-2007, 04:08 PM
its blowin because the exhaust is loose fitting around the head and the bottom spring has broken off the exhaust

well i took the carb off and checked the reeds *Edited**Edited* stripping the carb and noticed something odd with the piston, seems it had a bit missing so i took the head off and would you know the piston was in bits.

although it still had most intact and still had its shape the bottom of it had disintigrated and the top was i bit bashed but the head seems ok.

what size is the standard piston?

Bryan Raffa
01-28-2007, 02:42 PM
standard is a 68mm, Hows the jug,any scraches? if you need a bore the next one you will need is a .25mm,,,,68.25mm Wiseco Pro Lite part # 515M06825

First you will need to check and see what bore it really is!

They allways run like COO when there like that!

ssskipeee

surprisingly no scratches, the jug looks mint.

i`ll take pics of the piston tomorrow and check the size of it.

i`m surprised it ran at all!
