I just got a 1981 185S three wheeler that my uncle gave me. Runs fairly well and doesn't smoke. Plastic is in good condition. It just needs alot of little things done to it.
Right now my problem is it is very hard to start after it sets over night and when its reved up it takes a while to return to idle. Sometimes it high idles by itself until I put it in gear. I read the post "Carb Jetting 101" but I don't have any idea where any of the adjusting screws are located. Can somebody post pics? What brand oil do you recommend I need to change it. 10W40 right? Thanks in advance.

I'm not exactly sure about the high-revving, it may be carb related. Something as simple as a stiff cable or throttle slide. Good idea to clean the carburetor.
About carb adjusting, the idle screw is on one of the sides of the carb, not sure which one. The pilot screw will probably be on the bottom of the carb, by the bowl, facing downwards. Lastly, I believe all the other jets, etc. will be inside of the float bowl. I am not familiar with the 185, so I can not confirm any of this. Just trying to help.

your idle screw is on the right side of carb, and the mix screw is bottom front of carb.factory settings are 2 tuns out each.run them in and back out, dont over screw them in.the high reving could be the anti surge cup in the bowl, plastic cup looking

Welcome to the board.
rdlsz24 had a manual for that, hopefully it's still available. 185s is covered at the end.

Thanks for the help everybody. If there is something wrong with the anti-surge cup is that something that would be in a rebuild kit?

i havent seen it in a rebuild kit.it usually falls off during reassembly and sits in the bowl or not put back in at all.try a good cleaning though that is the usual suspect.clean all the little holes in the carb and carb parts

I havent cleaned the carb yet but I noticed the bottom of the slide is kinda rough from something. Can I smooth this over with a fine file and sandpaper or do I need another one?
I adjusted the timing chain, valves, and clutch today. Engine is much quieter now its been needing routine maintence done on it for a while. Also changed the oil. What should I do to lubricate the drive chain? I adjusted it as well.

Yeah you can smooth out the slide no problem. For drive chains I always use chain lube that you can get at the dealer. Or you can always use white lithium as well. I think the owners manuals say to use motor oil or gear oil.

Where would I go to find things like the rubber gromments that go under the rear fender and behind and down the side of the fuel tank? Mine are almost gone.

You can find decent used ones on eBay or go to the dealer for new ones. They can still get those I believe.

Had a hard start and slow idle return problem with my 185s, ended up being a broken timing advance lever. Remove the cap on the left side of the head and hose it out with brake clean then spray it with penetrating oil. turn the center piece with your fingers and you should see both advance arms move in and out.
