    200x lost spark??

hey, so i went to smith road and raced and in practice the bike ran great, then in my first moto it was cutting out at full throttle, then in the second moto it would cut out at like half throttle and just got worse until it would just randomly die. i just got around to lookin at it and i checked the timing and all and that was good. so i moved to the carb and cleaned that out again. then when i went to start it i got nothin. so i checked for spark and got nothing. so i followed all the wires and they all have good connections and everything? so im at a loss of what could be wrong. was the cutting out and misfiring a sighn that soemthing was going bad? and ideas anyone?

Sounds like your stator went bad . It mounts to the fly wheel cover and will be the smaller of the 2 . the other one is for the lights . a 20.00 part on fleabay.

Now that I think about it, it sounds like the stator coil to me, my brother's motorcycle did the same thing and that is what we were told to check, sure enough that was the problem. Do you have the book and a multi-meter? If you need the test values I can grab my book and post them.

Ironically when I pushed my x off the truck when I got home from the race and went to start it the ignition coil gave out. Ahh, the joy of riding 25 year old machines.

lol yea. i have a spare 200x bottom end that ran great when the top end let go. so im gonna steal the stator out of that and try it. if not ill just buy one. im just gonna start buying new whenever i "think" somethin is bad just to cancel it out.

but i do have a multimeter so the values would help alot too if u have them on hand. i probably should buy a manual for this thing lol. i rebuilt the whole motor w/o one but the little stuff is whats killin me now.

Just do a continuity test between the red/black stator wire and the engine block.

The black/red wire to ground should be 100-400 ohms.

alright so i put on the good stator and have strong current coming out of that. but we took a test light to it and we are getting alot of juice into this box and practically nothing coming out? so could this little box be bad and if it is can i get another one? also what does it even do? lol

That is your CDI box, and it can be tested using OHMS. I had the same problem you described above, and it turned out to be my ignition coil (going to spark plug) The ignition coil can also be checked using OHMS, or if you have another one laying around you could swap it out real quick and see what happens. I used a ignition coil off a 185, and im sure the 200s ones will work good too if you have one. I still run it with the 185 coil, the numbers are slightly different on the coil, but it works perfectly, and I havnt had any issues in the last few months. Good luck!
Here is the manual link. http://72.52.143.80/~trikes/ Find the OHM test for both the ign. coil and CDI box. Let us know what you find. Good luck.

alright well i checked the coil and that seems to check out with the multimeter. so im thinking its the cdi box. im not quite sure how toi check it and i dont have a spare laying around. so i guess ill try and get one through the classifieds here or something. unless theres a diagram that shows the round plug cdi's and not the 2 square ones that the 83's had

Personally, I'd guess the CDI from what you've described. Just had the same problem with a 350X.

i cant seem to figure out how i would do so? i looked at the diagram and that showed me how to test everything else but the cdi they showed had 2 square things instead of the round one that i have.
