Just got a Yamaha YTM 200

Never had a yamaha before, but here's what i got. Anyhow, seat is perfect, plastic all there but faded, good tires on it, and everything is rust free. Starts first pull, but smokes some..I think that's valve seals. The motor has a knock though. Gets faster as RPS's increase. Thought the clutch was slipping some, but the adjustment seemed to help. Any thoughts about what would cause a motor knock? Oil is overfull a bit also.. Any way this would cause smoke also? Paid 200 bucks for it, and took the pull sart off to make sure that wasn't the noise.

The original decal on the back plastic looks loks it said 200 on it at onetime. thought i saw a tag saying ytm 200 also, but i cant find it now..Yup..It.s a tym 200 chain drive..

I dont know about that..Hoping like heck it's the valve seals just old causing the smoke. That's cheap enough, but the knock im concerned about...

is it more of a "tick" or "slap" than a knock? hope so. adjust the valves and cam chain and if its still there its probably the connecting rod or at least piston related.

iF i had to describe it, sounds like a knock. I got the manual..(thanks again 3ww) and i will see if i can struggle thru a valve seal job. The cam chain adjustment looks like a bear according to the clymer, but i will attempt that as well. I am a good outboard guy, but not an ATV guy. I may just replace the motor if it looks like a piston job, as i have never been that deep before..Or think seriously about roadsiding it to get another honda..My old 200s was the ..

The cam chain adjustment is not hard, just not as easy as a Honda.

You should do a compression test before (if) you tear it apart.

Do you know what year that is?

Well..I managed to get a valve adjustment and Cam Chain adjustment done. Sounds better now. Not perfect, but better. I was told that by replacing the valve seals, the smoke would probably go away.. Anyone know if this is a fairly easy task? Tha manual touches on the valve job, but I do not have the tools to do an entire valve job..The seals sound simple enough though..And my compression tester is not narrow enough for that small plug unfortunately.. It's got tons of compression though..It will tear the rope out of your hand if you don't watch out.

It's an easy job, follow the manual one step at a time.

The valve seals come in the top end gasket kit.

If I was taking the top end apart, I'd check the piston and cylinder.

Rings are 30 bucks, you should think about getting new ones.

Dont worry about the cam chain adjustment, its simple. Just do what the manual says. I used to own one of those and loved it. Mine was an 84 and shaft drive though, bored .040 with wiesco piston. It was a runner for a 200. Good luck, ive got a manual laying around somewhere for one if you need any thing looked up give me a hollar.

Thanks Man. I have already done the cam chain and valve adjustment, and some of the noise dissapeared. I think that's going to be ok. It's the smoke i want gone. The manual has the whole teardown procedure, nothing specific to just a valve seal job. I am assuming i need to tear the head off and somewhere under there i will see what i need to do. I will look for a valve spring compressor, and hopefully it will be fairly obvious. I don't know about replacing ring's though..I don't think i want to go much further in than the valves..
