1985 Big Red 250, One back wheel has no power to it

Hey guys, was out riding the big red last night and all the sudden I started to hear a clicking noise from the rear end. It was pulling to the one side and I stopped and checked it out and it turns out my right rear tire was the only one spinning, the left rear tire has no power to it at all. Anybody have any ideas to what the problem could be?

My father in-law had the same problem on that model of trike it was the hub on that side that was shot. If you take the tire off and the spline is still turning thats the problem. Something to check anyway.

if the hub got loose and was ran that way for a while the hub and axle splines are probably no longer there.

defenitely sounds like a stripped hub, my buddy had it happened to him, im not sure what he done with it, i think he tacked the hub onto the axle with some weld, but thats not the right way to do it.. I'm not sure if a pin would work or something like that?

If the axle splines are now junk, this is one time I'd advise someone to just weld it together and call it a day. It can always be ground down to remove it and it gives you time to find a good used axle and hub......

If you want to protect things near it from melting, put LOTS of DRIPPING wet rags behind where your welding to keep it from heating up and hit it with the garde hose immediately after welding.

Alright sounds good I'm gonna tear into it tonight and check it out, I did have to tighten that hub up before I left for my ride last night so I'm pretty sure thats the problem. I think I'll just have it welded, thanks guys

I Took the hub off, the splines on the inside of the hub are pretty bad. The splines on the axle dont look really too bad, I'm going to take off the other hub and compare the two sides to see how the splines should normally look. Theres no way to weld the inside of the hub because it sits inside the swingarm and rides on a bearing. So, Can it be welded from the outside? Also, are these the only bearings in the rear end?

If the splines on the axle are still good, get a new hub. Don't weld it.

I'll take the other side off tomorrow and check it out. Does anybody know if any hubs for other three wheelers are interchangable with the big red 250? Besides the sx's...Looked on ebay so far, cant find one.

I'll have to try that, I cant find one anywhere. Okay, I took the other hub off, just to compare the splines on each side of the axle. The splines on the side with the brake hub are perfect, never had any trouble over there. The splines on the other side where the hub got loose arent really too bad. I can notice a difference in the sides, but its not much. The perfect side is more rigid, the splines are more defined, and the other side there just a slight bit rounded off. Do you think I'll be safe with just buying a hub? There far from smooth on the side thats bad, and they still have pretty decent grooves in them.

I Think I'll just need a hub on the left side. The left hub and the right hub are different sizes. I put the right hub on the left side to see how the splines would hold, and they didnt at all, and then I looked at both sizes and felt like an idiot. I'm pretty sure the axle is going to be fine, I have everything apart and the bearings are bad so i'm going to do those while I'm in there. I need the left hub though, looking at it from the back. The hub opposite of the brake drum.

These are from an 86 TRX250. I think they fit 250ES and 250SX. $60 shipped takes the whole pile. Axle and hub splines are perfect.
