Fuel filter

Is a fuel filter absolutely necessary? Did these bikes come stock with fuel filter? The reason I ask is because mine is leaking when I turn the gas on and now the bike wont start. I have compression, cleaned the carb, and have spark, the air filter is clean. Now I know the air/gas mixture is all messed up also! Any suggestions on fuel filter and carb tuning, I need all the feed back I can get. Frustration levels are up and tired of smelling like gas!

i believe you should run a fuel filter on everything, they are made for a reason. unless your filter is leaking so bad that the carb isn't getting gas, i don't think that would cause it not to start. did you put the carb back together correctly after the cleaning? what trike you got?

85 ytm200ern, shaft! I put the carb back right, with the exception of, I forgot to count the turns on the idle screw. So I put it back where I thought it was and try to fine tune from there. The problem is, it never started again to fine tune! I checked the carb to see if I forgot some thing, and no. Now the fuel filter leaked before, but not enough to make a difference. By touching it I made it worse. I live in the country and My truck took a on me and this is my only means of transport into town, 11 miles away. So the temporally fix of no fuel filter will have to be essential in order to get a new one. See the dilemma I face!

Dont know yet, havent gotten to it yet. I did tear the carb apart and cleaned it, put it back together just as it was. Is there something I am missing here? I think it has something to do with the air/fuel mix! I had to guesstimate when I put it back(air/fuel mix screw) and guess were it was before. I forgot to count the turns all the way in so I could put it back in the same place when done putting the carb back together, think this could be the problem? How do you get the carb right if it wont start?

Needle clip - 3rd position.

i'd run a fuel filter on somthing with a metal tank for sure. for like $5-6 it could save you a clogged up carb if sitting over winter months or somthing.

Well just got back from town with new fuel line and clamps and fuel filter. Will try and put this on and go from there. I will try the clip thing in a minute after tis dont work. Just cuz I dont want to pull the carb off again if I dont Have too. I will keep posted in this damn troubleshooting!

well something in the carb isnt working, so I will tear it off AGAIN and try the 3rd one down and two turn on the poilot. I did notice that when I put the new line on, it didnt flow untill I disconnected it from the carb. Does this mean something?

Are you meaning you took the float bowl off and no gas came out when you moved the float up and down? If so, there's a problem with your float needle. Or the petcock/filter is clogged.

No, the fuel line going into the carb! Just put the filter on.

If you have a air compressor Blow Air threw the Holes, you might just have something stuck .

Make sure you take your time & put it back together correctly .

MAKE SURE your ON / OFF Kill Switch is in the ON Position when Starting !

After you install the NEW Fuel Line & Filter - Make sure fuel is flowing threw by opening the petcock valve ( Fuel Line - don't connect it to the CARB so you can see if fuel is coming out ok )

Got it! You know what the problem was... I put the foat in and not paying attention, put the clip on top of the float needle instead of inside! Thanks guys for all your help!
