Got an '82 185s freebie today

A friend of mine said if I wanted it, come get it the hell out of his garage. He bought it in like new condition in '83 and has had it ever since, it even runs I am trading another member here a small trailer for a complete '81 roller, so all I have to do is swap the engine out of this one.

And it has some after market electric starter, not sure if that will stay or go, depends on my battery mounting and wiring ambitions

I dont know anything about it, if anybody has any info, I would appreciate it. It works, I jumped it and used it to start it, but it is not wired up at all, and not sure where to put a battery.

That was the main selling point there, all three are almost brand new. If not for the tires, i don't know if I would have snagged it. Aw hell, who am I kidding, I would have drug it home if the tires were bald and the jug has a hole in it

The pull starter has a NOS booster, very popular in 82', she should beat an 'r' hands down with that, lol. Good timing Tom, I just auto-xed two days ago, that motor should run good in here.

Looks like a good deal to me, hell the only thing better would have been if he paid you to take it. I have found some good deals, but I never find free trikes. How do you guys pull that stuff off.

Possibly, let me see if the one I'm getting with the roller works or if I need to use both to make one good one.

Referenceng the number 0645-184 and googling for this: 0645-184 starter I get an ebay auction saying it is a Polaris Snowmobile Starter. So, being as I have never owned a goki, is that a goki housing with a polaris starter? Oh btw nice score!!

I got this pM from a member on another site I belong to, Hope it lends some more info.

The starter kit is aftermarket. The company that made them is Goki. Not sure if they are still in business or not, but I visited thier website a few years ago. The kit uses a funky stamped ring gear with the teeth oriented 90 degrees from how they would typically be which gives it the right angle drive. The ring gear is also very small so it cranks the engine over very fast. Wouldn't work well with a larger engine as it would be geared too steep, but it will work fine in that application.

I am a design engineer in the snowmobile division of Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls, MN. The starter and bendix drive they used is our design for our snowmobiles. I spec'd the replacement (0645-539) a few years ago when the manufacturer (Johnson Electric) went out of business. The new one is made by Lucas. I am now an engine designer for two-stroke snowmobile engines.
