    My first trike, 1984 200x

Here it is, as I brought it home. Day 1 $130 1984 ATC that had been left and forgotten.

I hosed it off and brought it in. I pulled the rear fender to wash it and the gas tank was full of rusty water, so I took it off too.

I checked for spark, which looked good and not having a compression tester small enough for the engine. I put the plug back in, sprayed some starting fluid into the carb and gave it a kick. Nothing......
I went the next day and got a compression tester that fit and was getting 50-60psi. I had already downloaded the manual here and 60psi isn't enough. Still hoping I'd get lucking and find something easier to fix, I checked the valves, cam and timing. Everything seemed to be in order. A friend suggested that I put some oil in the cylinder and re-try the compression test. If it increases the pressure the definably rings. I did and it did, up to 125psi and tear down it was. Unlike my KX's, I couldn't get the head off with the engine is. If there is a way and I just didn't figure it out, LMK. Everything came apart good, I followed directions from the manual (this is the first time I've ever rebuilt and engine myself, at least one with valves) and I don't want to mess anything up. I've been around allot of engines being build but watching and doing is a big difference. Everything looked good, some wear in the cam, rockers and where the cam rides in the head but the piston and rings were done. Here's the pics of the engine stuff.

    And the piston.

I took it everything to the machine shop to have everything checked. The cylinder cleaned up at .25mm over so I got a first bore standard compression piston kit and dropped it off today to have the piston the wall clearance and final hone. With that out of the way I was back home this weekend and ready to start the rest of tear down and start powder coating.

I did the frame yesterday and got to take some pictures today when I got home today. I started out wanting to restore this but the cost of restore quality used or OEM new parts would have lead to spending money that I would have to wait until I earned it to spend it. Then I thought of a color scheme that would be a show piece for my shop. Then I settled on do it and ride it ASAP. I have plenty extra mirror red on hand and it is a Honda, so close enough. If you haven't guess, I plan on this being a rider. So, I didn't go through the pains of working the metal. filling the rough places left by surface rust or filing off the welding splatter. It could have been done slicker but the rust is gone and the PC is trail worthy.
In the blaster, removing all the rust and paint.

    Stripped and ready for pre-treatment.

Cooled and covered in some pinkish red powder, I use 7800K bulbs in the spray booth.

here are the pictures of the cured frame. Sorry about the way the pictures glare. This stuff is pretty shinny and I'm just not much of a photographer. The color isn't a match for Honda red, but I plan on covering all that up with mud, lol.

And some of the hard to get to places that gives us powder coaters problems ( orange peel and incomplete coverage. Not real tight but limited gun movement means you have to float the powder in sometimes, lol. Still came out pretty slick. I do mostly car parts, this is just the 4th or 5th tube frame I've done.

I was going to do the swing arm today but can get the hub nut loose. And, how are ATV tires broken down? We always changed you dirt bike tires, sometimes on the trail but what about these? Should I take them to a regular tire store and let them try to get them off or just go into them with tire irons? I only have 6" tire irons that I carried on the trail in my fanny pack. What about breaking the bead on them? BIG HAMMER?

ive powdered wheels for a long time and you did a fantastic job on the hard to get places. i think it will hang ok for being a rider. good job. for breaking the bead you can take a hilift jack and set it at the bead and under a truck bumper or something. works great. theyre not that bad at all.

Nice job. Looking at my 84 200x, they sure don't knock themselves out at the Honda factory to make cosmetically nice looking welds. Obviously structurally good, but for appearance, yech.
